I want to record some songs on my pc using adobe auditio 1.5. Software seems good and logical. Problem is I am getting a lot of hiss (-48db) because of onboard soundcard I think. If I get something like the M-Audio FW Solo will this largely eliminate this poblem. Please help, as I am loseing faith in pc recording.

Onboard sound cards have cheapo A/D converters. You need a decent PCI card or Firewire interface to get rid of the hiss.

PC recording is fine. I've been at it for 6 years now.

Yes, the likely culprit is your onboard soundcard. Sometimes this can be resolved, but I would highly reccomend getting something beefier. I love my little firebox with Audition (especially now that 2.0 supports ASIO), but if you are on a tight budget look around at some of the PCI options.

New Laptop

Sorry, should have mentioned I'm using a brand new laptop, Sony Vaio, so it will have to be an external card. Thanks for you replies, I was beginning to think people couldn't stand my stupidity.
