:( I want to record some songs on my pc using adobe auditio 1.5. Software sems good and logical. Problem is I am getting a lot of hiss (-48db) because of onboard soundcard I think. If I get something like the M-Audio FW Solo will this largely eliminate this poblem. Please help, as I am loseing faith in pc recording.

I had the same problem and tried the SoundBlaster Live that I had on hand, most of the hiss went away immediately. I think I'm going to go for a decent recording soundcard like the M-Audio 24/96; within my budget. With my Audio Technica mikes coming this will vastly improve recording my acoustic guitar.

Laptop

Sorry, I shouldhave said that I'm using a laptop for my recording as I need to be fairly mobile. I have purchased a brand new Sony Vaio which arrived today.

onboard cards weather pc or laptop will not give you any good results. some may. its a hit or miss. however Ive not heard of hiss from laptops. Ive heard buzzing and nioses. How are you plugging into the laptop? line in or mic in. word is, dont use the mic jack. also are you using a mixer. the mixer can cause hiss.
