soundcard compatibility

what are the issues here? i have a fujitsu-siemens pentium 4 with winXP. it runs at 2gigs and has 512 ram. does the motherboard or chipset matter? how do I find out what they are?

Motherboard, chipset and OS would be the main contributers to any driver conflicts.
 
thanks again tex. i'm not familiar with motherboards or chipset types. is there any easy way of finding out what there versions are, by maybe using control panel or something? i'll have a look for the manual too to see if its in there somewhere.
 
Hi again,

I've established that my chipset is a intel i845. What else do I need to check, before being happy that the soundcard I buy will work.
