It does not even bother me anymore to ask dumb questions, so here I go:

Do certain souncards work better with certain programs. In other words when shopping for a souncard should the program you use affect the choice of cards or vice versa?

Some cards are compatible to just about any program and some are'nt. The Delta series cards by midiman will work with just about anything. Some cards work the best with the programs they come packaged with. Like the audiowerk8 as an example by emagic, Logic audio takes advantage of certain aspects of the card where as if you used cakewalk with it, certain features could not be accesed. Yamaha DSP factory will lose some functions in certain programs.
Make a decision on card and software and then ask about it.

another note: some cards record at 24bit, but some programs will only allow 16bit recordings.

A lot of hardware will come packaged with a Lite version of a popular recording software. The advantage there is that they usually have template files and specific setup instructions for the two.

The Lite versions of the software will usually be enough for most beginners.
