It seems like I've been on here for months bugging people about Sonar. Ok, long story shortened: the studio is not mine. I'm just trying to get some of the bugs out of it for a project with some friends.

I just noticed a few days ago that the fella that owns the studio/PC/Sonar/etc..has put a soundblaster audigy in the PC.

any opinions on that? I've heard they're not the greatest soundcards for pro audio. but that could be just some peoples opinions.

anyone else use an audigy? the internal styled one?

Sound Blaster

SB cards are generally not good with recording, because their internal clocks are running fixed at 48 khz rate. If you need to use them, it's better to record at 48khz. Another thing that gripes me about them, is the deceptional ads, that they make. Their first audigy line cards were introduced as 24 bit cards, it was all printed on their boxes. Of course when you read the fine print, that 24 bit meant, that the card can only "play" 24 bit files and it can't record 24 bit audio. There is a 3rd party drivers set for Audigy card, they're called kxdrivers, using them, one can do some recordings. Sonar runs with those as well. I personally think, you can buy an inexpensive EMU card (BTW they're from the same company now ;) ), and save yourself the trouble :)

<<BTW they're from the same company now>>

isn't everything? :)

which company? Beatrice or Halliburton?

Since you took the trouble to reply (thanks! and to all others who have replied to my tiresome ramblings, much thanks!)

I'll continue the saga. I have a great friend in his late 50's with full blown diabetes. he is one of those guys who said to himself and the doctors "screw the dialysis and the shooting (insulin) " AFTER having endured both miserable treatments for a long time. a guys gotta do, etc......

he has a ton of good original songs he wants to record asap. I'm not being morbid, and neither is he (Marty is my buds name) but....his days are numbered. ya know? could be years.....months, whatever.

Ok, we don't dwell on or talk that stuff. He's killin me with his hairbrained Ideas though.

In his studio ( a bedroom without people sleeping in it) has a veritable boneyard of piece and parts. ONE of which is a REAL soundcard. I'm sorry, I cant' remember the brand. It was 2 grand new 7 or 8 years ago. with 8 1/4 inputs and 8 1/4 inch outputs.

it took up 2 spaces in the puter tower. WHY he took it out? beyond my comprehension.

THEN the guy waltzed over to guitar center/musicians friend...same thing (We're Beatrice :)

and bought a tascam 2488. fine machine. he doesn't know how to use it, and neither do the rest of us Idiots. I was just getting used to Sonar.

It's very weird situation. Thanks for your feedback, btw. I KNEW that audigy thing was a piece of gimcrack BS.

tascam 2488

I saw Tascam 2488 machines on MF and I was tempted for a while as well :)
I think, they're very inexpensive for their ability. No latency problems, no driver issues, soundcards and windows bugs to deal with :D
I think, you can figure them out, the only problem with those machines are the tiny LCD displays. If it can be hooked up to a PC montor, it may be easier to operate. Good luck in your quest and I hope best of health for your friend

In one of my machines, I've got a SB card and a Delta 1010LT. They cohabitate quite nicely but with limitations. There are some clocking mis-match errors when trying to run both cards at the same time. It depends upon the situation.

I have succesfully used both cards simultaneously in SONAR where I used the Delta1010LT for record in and the SB for my mains out/playback but not simultaneously as a live monitor. I don't do this as a rule but have found no problems with this. There doesn't seem to be a way to sychronize the two cards together which then makes every thing sound s.s.s.t.t.t.r.r.r.a.a.a.n.n.n.g.g.g.e.e.e .

I use the SB card from time to time strictly for playback and always from computer/windows sounds but never for recording as it basically sucks for that.

Best of luck to you. :)

Thank you so much

thankyou. we have an EMU 1820 now. I hope that solves some problems. also , it was suggested that we try to view the innards of the 2488 with a pc monitor instead of using a telescope to look at the onboard lcd
