Since I don't know of any places in Toronto that sell the Delta 44 sound cards, will a soundblaster audigy platinum do a somewhat good job when recording?

I have heard that the Audigy is limited to 16bit play and record. It will process internaly at 32bit. So that is one drawback.

I havent used one but chances are the DAC's are not pro quality.

If you want great quality you wont get it but for scratch demos it should work fine.

Forget about the POS Audigy!! It is nothing more than a glorified gamer card...

If you're in Toronto, just drive down to Buffalo or Rochester in NY and pick up the Delta at the Guitar Center in either city! Its only a 2-3 hour drive...

Well.... I'm thinking of an Audigy too... is it a bad idea???? I don't know much about sound cards and I'm not looking to do anything exotic...just record my guitar and mic... am I going to waste my money???

Hmmm.... OK, that's what I need to know.... but, without getting technical, what do these do that the Audigy does not and where would I find them?

Thanks for your help... much appreciated

the Audigy will do a "somewhat good job" at best....prosumer cards like the Deltas and the Aardvarks wont do anything that the Audigy wont do - they'll just do it alot better.....the biggest deal is the A/D and D/A converters which are the heart of the card and determine how good of quality you will get......

Gidge...thanks for that.....

Now, I'm pretty much a newbie on all this stuff... so help me out.... I'm cheap, but not so cheap that I wont spend and extra few bucks to get something that will work.....

What I want to do is just very basic home stuff, but I want it to sound reasonably good.... not perfect, but good. Just a guitar pickup, a mic...maybe a little mixing and perhaps some basic effects.

I also see that the Audigy lets me connect my video camera by firewire-type connection, which is kind of nice....

So.... is the Audigy too basic? Should I go just a little higher???

for what you will want to do, the quality should be fine....i think at least 99.99% of us started with cards that were worst than the Audigy and were happy with it.....

OK... that makes me feel a lot better... again, I'm not looking for super high-tech... just reasonably good quality, and I hate to waste money....
I was concerned by that earlier post that said:
"Forget about the POS Audigy!! It is nothing more than a glorified gamer card... "

Should I ignore that and just get the Audigy?

Thanks for your help... I really do appreciate it....

None, basically... just the on-board sound capability that comes with the motherboard.... I have built a new system... 1 ghz, plenty of ram, etc... but no sound card yet... that's my next move and why I'm investigating...

Sound blaster

The new soundblaster is just a shodow of the older 5 and 5.1 models, for starters it just has 1/8" inputs, and the quality isnt there, it is much cheaper than the older models too, I would look on Ebay for a Live Platinum if its for your home unit, that one is much better, or if you want a good mobil solution the Aardvark USB 3 is a really solid card, not as sexy but for just recording it does really well.

Whoa... wait a minute.... do I understand you right? The Audigy has only 1/8" inputs? I thought the 5.1 live and the Audigy had at least 1/4" mic and line inputs... not so????

If not, then it's more of a toy than a real card, isn't it??

i dont think the difference in quality from the onboard card to the Audigy will knock your socks off.....but it will be better....the question is how much you are willing to spend vs. how much better quality youd get out of it......
check out www.pricewatch.com and look for the lower end of the Audigy that starts around $50 and see if it has the features you want....also check out Creatives website for a detailed description.....

I dont know how much you were willing to spend on the Audigy Platinum, but if you go with the $50 version, you could save the $$$ to go with a dedicated audio card later....the $50 would not be lost as you could use both in the system.....

make sure you think this through before you put out $$$......while this post may talk you out of the Platinum, it isnt a POS.....you have to understand that there are alot of hardcore audio enthusiasts here as well as hobbyists....so different opinions of what a POS is are inevitable.......

sound blaster

Oh my mistake, the Audigy does have 1/4' imputs I got it mixed up with the new one the Extigy which has 1/8" imputs.

OK... now I think you're getting me into a clearer perspective... thank you. Perhaps I should just experiment with the on board system and see what happens from there? I don't know squat about recording with a PC... I have a multi track analog, cassette recorder..... and maybe I should just plug it in to the on board card and see how that works.... that said, I'm also looking to do a little mixing, maybe add a touch of reverb or tone adjustment... I just want to be able to plug my mic and guitar pickup in and get something that sounds decent... that's all....

Now, the Audigy does have a video connection that I like the sounds of, but then, I can get a firewire card to do that....

Hmmmm..... now you've got me thinking.....

Uhhhh... .I really hate to show my ignorance here... but.... what does POS mean?

POS=piece of shit......

at that Price Watch link i see even the $50 model Audigys have the IEEE1394 firewire connector.....you may wanna look into that.......

yes, go ahead and plug the outs of the old multitrack to the line in of the soundcard and see what you get........

if it was me, i would definitely go with the $50 SB Audigy...it will give you the firewire connector you want, a step up in quality, and if you are into midi or plan on getting into, SoundFonts are cool.........

LOL! I can't believe I didn't know what POS meant... can you? Jeez... I feel dumb... oh well

OK.. this is great.... if the $50 card had the firewire connection, perfect.. I was going to pay that much for a firewire card alone...

so maybe I should do that.... as you say, plug my multitrack stuff into it and play around... see what works for me... then spend more $$$ when I know what the hell I want! I like that plan....

Is there some mixing/editing software that I should get? I have n-track on my hard drive, but have never set it up......
