I just installed a SB 16 Live card and I've been having some oddities with my machine ever since. During boot-up I'm hearing a lot of sputtering going on and then complete silence for a while. Eventually, things seem to work themselves out and the screen comes up and everything seems to be working okay. These odd noises have me a little worried though. I have an older Pentium 166 and I noticed that the installation book says that the card needs to go in a PCI 2.1 compliant slot. The book on my computer doesn't say if the PCI slot is 2.1 or even what version it is. Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks

First of all just call it an SB Live!...the SB 16 is an old card...the predecessor the the Awe 32 and 64 cards.

Anyway, what do you mean by sputtering? Sound actually comes from the soundcard, or your computer sputters?

You might remove the legacy support. The Live! will automatically install a legacy driver for old DOS based applications that you probably aren't using. Check your documentation for the proper procedure to remove it....if it's not there we can do it the brute force way.

I just replaced my old SB16 with the SB Live. The old card worked fine. I'll try the legacy removal but I'm doubting that will solve the problem. I'll tell you this, I placed the card in a slot that was simply convenient rather than in line after the first card. That is there is already a card in slot number 1. I left slot number 2 empty and put the new card in slot number 3 just because it was easier to get to. I wonder if it makes a difference? Should I have filled slot 2 instead?

And the sound is happeneing durring boot-up so obviously I mean it's coming from the system board--not the sound card which isn't activated until after the boot-up occurs. What I'm referring to is those typical clicks all computers make when they're booting. Now, instead of a steady stream of clicks, thy're very dispersed and eratic sounding. Almost like the computer is trying to hang. Thanks for your help!

Actually the soundcard is "activated" shortly after the computer POSTs.

If there is a configuration problem with any hardware in your system, you will often see windows "hang" temporarily during boot up. The clicking noise you're hearing is most likely the hard drive (it better be). When the hard drive stops and everything seems to freeze for a bit...windows is trying to initialize a device. If a device is misconfigured, the system will often hang for several seconds (10-30) or hang permanently.

The reason I suggested the legacy driver is that you claim the system works fine except for the annoying bootup. I recently worked with a Live! and had problems getting the legacy driver working (and eventually disabled it because it's useless).

Check your device manager and see if anything isn't working. (right click on my computer and select properties)

If everything is fine, it could just be the effect of bulky drivers on your underpowered system.

Yes, the order in which you install PnP devices is important because the BIOS will assign IRQ's based on slot position. There are many things that could go wrong here, and you should consult your manual. Often times PCI slots are shared. I noticed tonight on an Asus motherboard that it's setup such that PCI slots 2 and 4 are shared, as are 3 and 5. On my Abit BE6 slots 3 and 5 are shared with the Highpoint controller which is kind of a pain.

But alas, we're going into to much detail when we're not even sure if there's a problem. If your certain that everything is working fine, then don't worry about it. The speed at which windows will boot is very much dependent on your hardware.

Thanks Slack! I put the card in the second slot and removed the Legacy driver and now things seem to be back to normal or at least close. SB adds a couple of items to the start menue (which I like) so I think that makes the machine sound a little different than it use to, but it sounds okay I think and everything is working alright.
