i was driving down the road the other day listening to the radio and all of a sudden Def Leopard comes on and my whole car filled up with deep rich full sound, as opposed to the songs before it. the same thing happened to me this morning but this time it was Bryan Adams.

I've noticed this before and to me it must be more than the instruments.

About an hour ago i was strumming something and was reminded of it again when i changed from strumming with my fingernails to the soft side of my thumb.

So i am wondering what is going on? And does the same theory apply from the playing example as the recording examples. Essentially what i'm asking is sound manipulated the same way with our interfaces & software etc. as it is with our hands?

Are the surfaces being changed during processing? thanks

I'm thinking the anomaly is related to the fact that Def Leppard is just throwing out alot of signal. Lots of chorused bass and guitars. I think they're drums were always electronic which means you can get alot of "fuller" sounds signals.

Make sense?

i see what your saying, but really want to know what is happening, what is creating the sound change related to surface change. What is going on when i change from my fingernails, or pick, to the soft side of my thumb. this happens naturally, yet it can also be prossessed. So i was wondering if what is happening naturally is the same phenomenon applied to the processing? thanks:)

What you are hearing when you change from a pick to the side of your thumb is you are physically changing the attack on the note, the decay is also affected but what you hear is more attack. I'm not sure if this is what you are wanting to know if this can be done in the processing phase or not. Something similar can be done using compression/limiting and with gateing but that may not be quite what you are looking for. This is a question for someone with more editing experience than me, but I suggest trying altering the attack and see if that gets you clocer to the sounds you have described.

thanks that helped too, what i was looking for were the principles behind what is actually happening. For example, i understand how to change the sound such as palm muting for instance, but just really wonder why the sound changes in relation to surface change take place. i suppose when i get a book about sound & accoustics it may get into these principles, so maybe i should be patient until i get the book huh?:) thank you for your replies
