what would the difference be between the sound obtained by recording on a Fostex FD-8(by way of 250 zip drive), then mixed down to vhs tape compared to recording onto an Alesis ADAT LX-20 (i guess from the same Fostex recorder) would there be enough of a difference to tell???
just wondering,

If I understand your question, you're wondering if there would be an audible difference between mixing down to a VCR (hifi stereo or not) and an ADAT (which is a multi track recorder)? Well...a big difference. An ADAT, while not designed for stereo mixing would blow away any VCR. But here's another idea, get some recording software and mix to your computer. Then you can do a little editing and get your self a CD burner and your away.

Yup, as TrackRat said, Huge Difference.

If you ever get the bucks ( Me, too!) the
alesis Masterlink is the way to go. $1300,
but seems worth every penny.
