Hi
I just bought a new fostex x-34 and I tried recording my guitar on it but for some reason I have to turn my guitar amp all the way up just to get a signal on the 4 track which is still kind of low and when I go to listen to what I recorded the recording is low and a bit muddy sounding. I tried adding the bass and treble to it but then it sounds too distorted. I don't know why it's like that. Any suggestions? Oh and another question...I was wondering if I could use the computer as a mixdown device using an audio recording software to record the mix from the 4 track recorder instead of recording it to cassette tape? Would that work? Thanks!

Hi Brene'
and welcome to the boards,

As for your dilemma,I brene there, done that -

sorry, just had to get that one in

Simplify recording matters any way you can. If you've a mike, start recording your speaking voice. If you do not have a microphone, get one ! Also perform all manner of insidiuos cable tests.

are you using the preamp?

if you're recording your amp with a microphone ... you need to boost the mic-level signal to line-level. You do this with a preamp.
If you haven't already ... try turning up the preamp gain or trim a little. From the looks of it, these knobs are on the back of the X34 next to the XLR inputs.

Thanks for replying! Yea at first I was just plugging the amp directly into the recorder but like i said the signals were just too low so I tried micing the amp and it helped with raising the signals but the sound was muddy. When I play the lower strings it gets kind of distorted also. How far from the amp does the mic have to be to get a good clear sound?

Many differing schools of thought on that, but I'd put it right agin the grill cloth pointed directly at speaker center.
