SOUND PROOFING please help

Hey.. I have just joined...

Please tell me the absorbancy of rugs/carpet if you know, and also if the majority of my problem would be coming from my windows.

Here is my situation:

I have just moved into a place that i thought was GREAT until i realized that there is almost constant low noise of traffic and birds....

I have a bedroom on the middle floor and a "studio" on the 3rd..
The middle floor does not have as much bird problems but the traffic is still there.

It is a weatherboard apartment (no concrete between walls) and i figure that the majority of the sound had to be coming through the windows...

I got a whole lot of rubber foam and put it over them but the difference was virtually nothing (but it was not air tight)..

To move everything from the middle floor (furniture) to the 3rd (and visa versa) would be a HUGE job..

THERE ARE 2 POSSIBLE SULOTIONS I SEE BUT WANT TO MAKE SURE FIRST:

Try to FULLY seal the 3rd floor windows (my feeling is birds might still be heard).

Put the studio on the middle floor and seal off the entire window opening to by hanging 2 rugs back to back..

The thing is it takes MASS to block sound and neither foam or carpet are materials with a lot of mass. Chances are the carpet or rugs will have no more effect than your foam did. I was able to block sound from going through my basement window using 3/4" MDF, well caulked all the way around. That is a material with a lot of mass.

That is a great idea except that you will probably want to use the window on occasions so you could make a plug out of mdf with rubber or magnetic seals round the edge, so you can put it in and take it out as needed. Or shutters.
