I am thinking about moving from soundfonts and softsynths to a dedicated hardware module llike the Roland XV2020 and just wondered if anyone finds this a faster method for getting ideas to the tracks?

Would I be better just sticking with a software solution? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

...Well, if you're looking for faster method for getting ideas to the tracks, then Soundfont will do just fine. Just make some templates in your sequencer (SONAR, right?) contains attachment of Soundfonts, setting, and your general softsynth set up. It will safe your time adjusting those synth everytime you start some project. I got several sound modules which need to be adjusted manualy before work in sequencer mode. They provide better sound in some way. I'm using both softsynth & external most of the time. But if you decide to buy some, make sure it's fully controllable via sys-ex.

So your saying that the hardware route is not necessarily quicker for building a mix? I may not go down the sound module route if there are no critical advantages.
