I am using Sonar XL2 and I am pretty good at doing audio recording. I am trying to do some midi stuff now and when I create a midi from my other computer a then make a file and open it in Sonar XL2 I cannot hear it. Is it because my soundcard will not work with it or do I need to connect an external soundcard. Right now I have a Yamaha MU5 hooked to my other computer but it will not hook up to my new computer for all kinds of reasons. I would just like to be able to hear it and make a CD with some audio parts added. I have been very successful with making CD's of audio recordings. Thank you, Tommy

Does your soundcard have an onboard synth? If so, you should be able to hear it by setting the output of the MIDI track to that synth. If not, then you would have to connect an external MIDI synth or you can use softsynths. SONAR comes with some. Go to an unused Audio Track and go to the effect bin and right-click. Select a DXi like Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas that should be there. Now, go back to your MIDI track and change the output to be that instance of the Edirol VSC Dxi.
