I am in the process of shopping for a new computer and I want to know if the card that comes with it will be worth using for home recording...or should I just plan on buying a card seperate. I currently record externaly on an ADAT and bring it to a friends to dump onto his computer so we can work on it more (more tracks and mixing). I want to start doing this at my place on my computer. Does anyone know anything about a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card? Also, what sound cards are worth getting and about how much.

thanks

the turtle beach should be right up there with the best soundblaster cards, but that doesn't really say much...
can you get a deal without the soundcard?

in its class and for its price, the Santa Cruz is about the best you can do...very decent card....

you may want to look for a card that will do straight digital transfers from the ADAT.....

RME Hammerfall 9632 will do ADAT transfers WITH ADAT sync.... not cheap ($700 cdn), but it works....... (mind you, $700 cdn is about $200 US these days! ;) )

I could mention the SB audigy which has a value version that sells as low as 63.00 us. 24/96 and friendly with about any eqipment. It has only 2 inputs but so does the Auidophile and you can listen to your CDs though this one.

My understanding is that the Audigy will play back 24 bit files, but not record them.

The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz comes THX certified (whatever that means)

It sounds like even the best sound cards that come with the computers are not going to be as good as I need or should get .

It also sounds like I should look for an interface....any suggestions.....? I have also heard that most interfaces come with a sound card.

Any more names of cards, interfaces would be great help.

Thanks!
