I know this is pretty basic but, how do I identify the Sound Card installed in my PC. I've tried to download a "Sound Card Detector" program but it wouldn't download. Whenever I've looked at multimedia devices in Control Panel, the only info I get is:Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC. I don't know if that's the name of the Sound Card or not. Does anyone know an easy way to find out what Sound Card I have installed?

What OS are you running?

In Win98 just right click on "My Computer" and go to Properties, Device Manager and see what is listed under Sound and Video Game Controllers.

Ok, so now what?

Thanks Tex,
I did as you suggested and this is what appears there:
"Crystal PnP Audio System MPU-401 Compatible"
Is this a Sound Card that I will have to replace if I wish to use my PC as a 8 or 16 track recorder? Is this just a cheap Generic Sound Card that they throw in most PC's? I don't know from Sound Cards except that you have to have a decent one to start recording. If you don't know, than where should I go to find out if this Sound Card is any good or if it needs to be replaced?
I appreciate any advice you can give. dave_C

It sounds like a generic 16bit card but try a search on google and see what you can find. It will work but you will get much nicer results with a good 24bit card like one of the Deltas.

Yup. Crystal makes cheap (usually on-board) sound cards. I fought with an on-board Crystal chipset when I started years ago with Cubasis. Get rid of it. You can pick up a decent 24 bit card under 200 bucks.

About picing up a new Sound Card.

Sean,
Thanks for the hit.
So tell me, what Brands should I be looking at, that will have a decent 24 bit card for under $200?
