sound card recording for vocals; help!

Hi,

Here's a newbie question for you guys(gals): To do respectable home PC digital recording - especially vocal tracks, is it advisable/do-able to iput directly into the sound card from a studio mic? Or is a pre-amp required/reccomended; any recommendations of sound cards with an onboard mic input preamp? We would need one to two input channels total at this point in the game, BTW.

Most of the better sound cards do not have built-in pre-amps.

Most sound cards that do have built-in pre-amps, have cheap-ass built-in pre-amps (read SBLive here).

So unless you happen to have a sound card with a *good* built-in pre-amp, you will need to get a stand alone pre-amp (or a mixer with built-in pre's).

One last consideration, if the studio mic that you have is a condenser mic, it will need phantom power to operate. There's another reason to get a pre-amp or mixer.
 
The Midiman Audio Buddy is an interface box that has two XLR - 1/4" inputs, and a line-out for connecting to the soundcard. It also can provide phantom power, me thinks. There may be other similar competing products, but when I searched a couple months ago I couldn't find any. - DougC
