hey everyone- i've got a problem w/ static comin through my playback on my recordings. It doesn't happen all the time when I'm recording only sometimes. When I record. there is no static, and when it does playback w/ static there is not continual static, it only has static when there is sound <other than silence> playing back. I am getting static on the recordings from both my korg n1 and my at 3035. I have a gateway pc w/ 128 mb ram, 30 or 40 gb harddrive, windows 98, and i have my korg n1 <keyboard> and audio technica at3035 <mic> playin thru a behringer preamp, into a delta 44 sound card- i've cked my cords and its not a power and signal cord crossing, I've had the tubes cked out on my preamp, and nothin is wrong w/ them, and I am using all trs cords... I've had this problem for months and noone at any of the local music stores or anywhere has been able to help me figure out what the problem is- I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the soundcard is goin bad? If anyone could please help me solve this problem it would be great- thanx alot

Are there any signal processors in your setup? There might be a noise gate in there somewhere. The effect would be no hiss untill theres a signal at the input strong enough to overcome the gate. Then the noise would start. If you turn off the gate, the noise will be there all the time, but this is perhaps less irritating than on and off.

My old Korg M1 synth was noisy when run direct. That was a function of the synth itself, and had nothing to do with effects or faulty equipment. Running the signal through a tube preamp helped to reduce a lot of it, even if it was at the expense of some hgh end detail.

I have a dedicated DAW with windows xp pro and a motu 24i as my only soundcard. If i try to play audio through windows media player for example, in other words, through the windows mixer, i get the static you are describing. To listen to music i have to load it into sonar which uses the 24i's wave driver to playback audio so I get no pops or static. When I use fruityloops or wavelab i need to use the motu asio driver. I dont know what software you are using but try to find some kind of options area and try different drivers.

i am using cakewalk pro audio 9 right now---- as far as the static is concerned it seems to be completely random and whatever the problem is its during the recording process, not the playback process, it will only do it at random times on random recorded tracks, then on those tracks w/ static there will always be staticon the playback, and on those tracks w/o static there will always be no static on playback- there does not seem to be in correlation btwn the static and level of audio- it will come up w/ static on the softest of audio, and on the loudest, and then if the music is crescendoing, or dimunendoing the static will do the same w/ the music-- its very frustrating to record a take and have no static then go to redo it and redo it perfectly and then have static that time--- i think pro audio 9 has noise gates, so maybe i could try to use those- but i dont understand why sometimes there will be no static at all, and others it will be horrible

also as far as the n1 bein noisy- my mic is also havin the static jus like the n1, so the prob can't be w/ the n1 alone, its gotta be somethin that effects both of them

I had a problem with mystery static popping up last year. Turned out to be a crappy patch cord. If this is happening on all your instruments, try changing the cord on the Delta (there is one that goes from the breakout box to the card in the computer right?) If that isn't possible, try recording directly into a soundblaster line in (if you have one) or any generic soundcard on board.

#1 Rule of Debugging - Always do the cheapest fix first:

Try different cables.
