I am planning on recording from the RCA outs of a Korg Kaossilator Pro. I'm thinking that that the input of my sound card should be fine. I'm planning on testing this as it will be the cheapest way to go but wanted to hear others experience.

Is an audio interface definitely a better way to go? If I do I will go with Firewire. I simply don't trust my USB on my cheap desktop and would prefer the more efficient/dedicated Firewire.

But can you get perfectly fine recordings using the the line in on a sound card. And I would need an RCA to line in cable. I assume this would not degrade sound in any way correct?

Thanks

It'll do the job. You can spend thousands if you want, Just keep in mind you get what you pay for.
