Hello. Any Ideas???

I record directly into my line-in on my computer sound card. I have a variety of sources - clean guitar, drum machine, synth, bass, etc - and have a good, clean signal that goes into the sound card.

After laying down a track and playing it back, I notice a sound which can best be described as "relatively high frequency overtones/harmonics". The frequencies heard are not diverse - in other words, it doesn't depend much on what musical frequencies are being recorded.

The sound is very faint - almost un-noticeable, but still there.

The problem seems to only occur when I am running a direct line in, ie bass/synth, guitar. The problem isn't there when running sound through a nice mic -> mixer -> computer.

I understand that it may be my source, but the sound doesnt exist anywhere else but the played back recording. I can not hear it in the "monitor" of the sound card while i am recording it....

any advice? I've tried to cut out the frequencies with software eq, but no real luck.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

What is the level of signal going in? You may be recording a little too hot.

my levels are good. i'm not approaching the red, by any means.

the sound quality is good - no distortion, if that's what you are suggesting. These sounds seem to be additions that the sound card has made in interpreting the signal, as i only hear the overtones/frequencies on playback of the recorded sound.when i use line-in sources, rather than mic sources.

Thanks!

You're not running the guitars directly into the sound card are you? Are they going through a preamp?

if ur running the guitars directly into the sound card and not using a program, for example, like line 6 pod farm or gearbox then its gonna sound pretty bad(awful)

I was assuming that he had a soundcard which has a switchable DI input. Although, that assumption could be bad on my part.
