I have a Yamaha MG 12/4 mixer
1- octava 319 mic
Dell cpu
SoundForge, and Vegas - software for recording
what kind of sound card do I need?

thanks.

An M-Audio Audiophile will give you 2 analog inputs, s/pdif and midi. A Delta 44 will give you 4 analog inputs. I have the 12/4 hooked up to a Delta 44 - works well

what kind of music? what's your budget? It depends on a lot, give us more info and we'll be glad to help!

Yes, as BrettB has just shared with you. you will need to supply us with some more info.

What's your budget?

What kind of music are you creating?

How many seperate devices do you need to record simultaneously?

Etc........

spin

my budget is open though I'd like to stay on the lower end.
I'm just going to be recording myself - vocals and guitar

i'm just trying to understand how to record "studio quality sounding" material from a home system...

using vegas - I'm not about to spend the money on protools...i don't know how to use it anyway.

look at

hoontech dsp 24 value
audiophile
echo mia
all 24bit cards.
just makes sure your pc chipset is compatible with the sound card.
if you want expensive multi input look at rme and lynx.
or delta in the mid price range.
