I just purchased an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ computer with the XP Home Edition operating system. I need to select an audio interface with the necessary driver support. I would like to consider either the M-Audio Audiophile Firewire or Delta 66 audio interface. Yet, when I checked the appropriate website to download the drivers, only the AMD Opteron processor was referenced for the 64-bit driver. Should I assume that these newly released drivers work for the Athlon processor as well? I've heard that one must be extremely careful with new versions of Athlon processors because new chipsets are necessary to support their new features.

Since these 64-bit AMD processors are relatively new and possibly lack in driver support for manufacturers of certain hardware, should I consider a less powerful computer for now? I would like to clarify these driver compatibility issues before I proceed. I still have the option to return the computer.

To complete my DAW, I am planning to use the Motif 8 synthesizer and Cubase VST 5.1.

Any advice you have is greatly appreciated.

Since you are using windows xp and not xp 64,the 32 bit drivers are the ones that you would use. The drivers listed on the M-Audio web site for windows xp should work just fine.

Are you saying that since I am using windows xp, 32 bit drivers would apply for all hardware (i.e., soundcards, synthesizers, other external devices) used with my new computer?

I need to be absolutely sure before I open the box to this computer. Once that is done, I am stuck.

Thanks.

ya i would agree with ocnar, since you are using xp home (which is based on 32 bit), using 32 bit drivers just makes sense. i think if you had windows 64 bit version then you would need the new drivers. Ya i'm pretty sure that is right but don't open that box on my advice alone.
