I have a problem trying to get my Soundblaster 16 card to communicate with my Line 6 POD via the MIDI port. I have an old Gateway 120mHz 40 megs of RAM running Windows 95. There are no conflicts evident in the System fom my control panel. I have the cable plugged in properly: MIDI Out to MIDI In, MIDI In to MIDI Out. The cable isn't defective because it works with another computer. AS a test,I tried to communicate with my drum machine and nothing happens either.

The only thing that I notice is that in the Windows audio control panel the check box for MIDI is greyed out.

Any ideas anyone?

Maybe the MIDI driver is not installed or not installed right?

Is the MIDI driver a Windows driver or a Sound Blaster driver? If it's SB, I downloaded the most recent drivers from Creative Labs and installed them.

Well, the drivers originated with Creative Labs since it's their hardware, but they are on the Windows install disk too, so it's kind of both. It's an old card so they probably don't work on them much any more, so it probably doesn't matter if you got yours from Creative or from Microsoft.

The fact that it's greyed out indicates that it's not available. Perhaps it's been disabled?

I'm not really sure what else you can do, not having similar hardware here to look at.

go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Multimedia (I think that is the path) look for midi devices and make sure it is installed and active.

PS - Get a new computer, any computer, and a OS that is less than 7yrs old. :p

oh, and the MIDI being grayed out in the windows mixer probably just means that you dont have any midi instruments available on your sound card. That is the only time the MIDI volume is used. I would think that the old SB would have some midi sounds so once again the driver may be the culprit.

Make sure any software using the SB Midi out has that MIDI port selected in their midi preferences section.

Thanks Tex and Al, I have two newer computers but they are located in other places. I was just trying to come up with a use for the old one that is sitting around.
