'ello!

I've done a first mix for the latest band to brave my studio, thought I'd gauge reaction.

Just to prepare you, they're a bunch of poor students, so their equipment wasn't outstanding, especially the damn drums, as is often the case with the bands I record.

I guess their style is this sort of modern post-rock type stuff, naturally they don't like being referred as Emo!!!!!! The vocals severely divided opinions of all the people I've played this to so far, I'm not overly into shouting myself, but there seem to be no end of bands that sound a bit like this in my area at the moment!

Taking their influences into account I wanted to go for a contempory rock sound, I've been trying to emulate the sort of Fall Out Boy/The Used type sound, especially on the drums. As I said above, the kit sucked, and I haven't got the means to use drum replacement at the moment(don't really fancy it either), so I was a bit up against it.

Anyway, here is a link to the file, sorry but you have to wait a minute to activate the download;

I'm happier with this one than previous attempts at the genre, although I wish the snare skin had been fresher, I've had to compress the b'jesus out of it to get the presence I wanted.

Well, be interested to hear what you think.

I'm certainly no expert, but I do happen to like hard rock (although not so much the shouty kind) and I'm a drummer, so I can comment on the drums.

The drums sounded pretty good for a cheap drum kit. The kick didn't sound too bad - it had the nice mid/high 'tick' that sounds good for this style. It could use a little more low end, but that may just be because I listened with earbuds. The one thing that stood out most was the toms did not sound good to me. Too much ring, which makes them sound really cheap. I'm not sure how much you can do after the fact, but it sounds like they could have used some dampening and/or a good tuning. Maybe a good EQing to take out some highs and add a little more oomph would help. The ringing doesn't seem to fit this style very well.

Other than that, it sounds good to me! Good job. I know it's hard trying to make a cheap drum kit sound good. That's what I have been trying to do for the last few months with my kit! It's amazing what new skins, proper dampening and tuning can do.

Hi dude,

thanks for your comments, glad you think the kick and snare are at least passable, I totally agree with you about the toms, I'll be modifying them shortly. Better skins on them would have made a hell of a difference, but alas, this is often the case.

Anyone else got any opinions? :)

ahem, 'bump!'

Sorry, this forum is so busy, I was hoping to get a tiny bit more feedback. I apologise for my greed. :rolleyes:

I would try to upload some place else. I think the waiting time on that site is too long and peole get put off with waiting. What format did you upload in?

Sorted!

Hi, yes, I've ditched that host in favour of a better one!

new link;

I'm no expert in this genre but I thought the band was pretty tight. He's my take on it all....
I thought the drums sounded pretty good. The tom roll around 3:25 reveals the flabbiness of the toms. Could use some more bass overall in the mix. Guitars were a wee bit treble-y for me. Is it just me or are the guitars a wee bit too loud?

Again, tight band just needs a few tweaks for me...

:D:):D:)

I'd say you're off to a good start, but I agree with most everything ido1957 had to say. The guitars (the distorted ones--not the intro) are too loud and thin (treble-y, I think he said. :)) They need to be thicker in the middle, and the bass guitar needs to come to fill in the bottom end.

I wanna say the vocals need to come up, but that might just be them getting trounced a bit by the guitars. Maybe if the guitars come down some, the vocals will sound fine.

thanks guys

Hello Ido1957 and Whitestrat, and thanks for your input.

Yep, I think your comments are fair, I'm working on new mix and am addressing those flabby toms, I think I'll have them sounding better.

So, you reckon possibly letting a bit more lower mid back in on the guitars then reducing their overall volume, then bringing the bass up a bit. I'm just a bit worried that the drums will start to disappear under it all, but I'll give it a try.

I'll post further mixes as soon as they are done.

thanks

jim

Song is great man, it's just that you have to fix some things, like the guitars, but that's already been mentioned. Snare could come bit closer. Voice tends to get buried by the guitars.
Just give the song a bit more work, it's pretty good.

Joe :):)

Here is what i would change. The snare is too tubby and prominent at certain points of the song. The guitars lack definition and are like stated earlier...trebly. Im inclined to think a bit too scooped. The vox for me are just terrible from a performance standpoint. They were recorded ok however. Overall the mix doesn't gel together for me. All of the instruments sound as though they are in different areas, not like a band in one room. Drums are also very boxy sounding. I think the mix is in serious need of work as is the band. Even if this were polished to professional standards i don't think the musicianship is really there. Nice attempt though.
