Hi,
I know I just posted a thread asking about cheap gates recently and they're like the most boring thing. But I've got a line on a few and want opinions. Which would you choose between:

-Used Valley Gatex ($99 plus shipping)
-Used dbx 242 ($85, no shipping)
-New Samson S-gate 4 ($139, no ship)

I know, what's the Samson doing in there? Well, it has some pretty cool sounding control parameters, including two filters to gate only certain frequencies. Check it out: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SGate4/
PS: will be used to gate drums...

I have had a Samson and it was unusable. It made a popping sound ever time it opened... POS!

The DBX is a good unit and I haven't had problems with it... Yet.

Dunno about the Valley Gatex...

The valley Gatex is a great little gate. Valley makes some pretty cool stuff.

I was under the impression that almost all gates that weren't set to expand made some type of noise when closing. Some are worse than others I suppose. I owned a DBX gate that was pretty bad in this respect for a month or two. I believe it was in fact the 242 you are looking at. I am not certain though. Is the unit a half rack size?
The DBX I use now I think works 10 times better. The DBX project 1 274. You can typically get them cheaper than the 85 your going to pay for the 242 as well.

Was the 242 model number correct? I just did a quick google and it appears that the 242 is DBX's 5 band parametric EQ, not a gate.

sorry

You're right. The correct model number is dbx 274. I'm waiting on getting it because it has no dialable frequency sensitive gating. I'm looking at a Symetrix 564E that has low and high pass filters to help pinpoint what frequencies trigger the gate.thanks for the input.
