Soon to be NEW USER.. Any Tips..??

Hello everyone... I will be a an owner of this great machine shortly.. Just found this forum, and wanted to say hi.. Anyone have any tips or info to share with a newbie to the unit?? Little bit about me: Playing piano for over 20 years, drums over 10, and guitar and bass for over 7 years.. I also sing as well.. I'm primarily a blues and jazz musician, but like all styles of music. Can't wait to get this unit... What a great machine...:)

Hey a 1 man band! No tips for ya yet, it depends on how you use the machine and what you want to do. Feel free to post once you have have questions though:)

Yeah I'm pretty much down to a one man band..:) Played in many bands over the years, but with being married, having a child, working full time, and having a wife who is a full time college student, it's impossible to find time to play in a band anymore.. So I do for myself now.. I plan on using the Fostex MR-8 to add live guitar, vocals solo & background... I have a Yamaha keyboard that has a 16 track sequencer so I can do all my backing tracks on it (minus guitar and vocals), then drop that sequence to the Fostex, and go nuts...:) It really helps knowing how to play several instruments. Plus I know how to pull them off on the keyboard as well. Took years of practice, but I can play very convincing guitar, bass, sax and drums on my keyboard.. Plus I also have the Zoom MRT-3 drum machine that I'll use for drum tracks as well...:) It's going to be fun too... I'm hoping to to order it by the 11th of this month... Tax return baby!!!!!:):)
 
You might want to download the manual and start reading, it never hurts to get a head start on that sort of thing, I did, and it really paid off big time. And remember, delete unused.

Already on it.... Been reading the manual for the past 2 days.. I like having a head start on things before I get them..

Yeah I read manuals for things i want to buy in the future too. I thought it was just me.

But yeah, "Delete Unused" will become your good friend.

Speaking of midi: I use the mr-8 midi out / Tempo map ( with Midi Sync Out = Click ) to control the tempo on the boss dr-5 drum machine. It works great !

I have absolutley no experience using midi. I would like to learn more though. Do most drum machines with midi ports on them have the option of being controlled by an exterior unit?

Not being an expert: I think everything should be on the same Documented Tempo Map (click track) - unless of course its some free form jamming !!
I think all this technology is helping my guitar playing !

You are exactly right. Using a documented tempo/meter map makes working with other equipment so much easier. For example, if your PC audio app can be set to bars/beats, then everything will line up and make it easy to work with "verses" and "choruses" instead of "minutes" and "milliseconds".

Yea,

mr-8 controlling dr-5 drum machine

on mr-8:
setup the Tempo Map
set Midi Sync Out = Click

On the DR-5 side:
I go into midi mode, arrow to sync and make it midi and then return to the desired pattern

Hit Play or Record/Play on the mr-8: it will even start the dr-5 and sets its tempo to its own Tempo map ?

I'm glad I got the dr5 now. I just have to find about a 4 hour block of uninterupted time to figure the damn thing out! This is good information. Thanks guys, and welcome redstar.

I'm very happy the MR-8 has a midi out. That's one of the reasons I'm getting it. I midi sync my Zoom MRT-3 to my keyboard all the time and I can use the sequencer start and stop buttons to control the drum machine.. I can even use the keyboards tempo button to set the tempo on the Zoom as well.. The MR-8 works the same way too..:) Can't wait to get it:) These little buggers are selling out fast too. I was looking on a website the other day and they had a lot left, and just over night they were cleaned out. Several places are still waiting for another 2 weeks to get them back in..
