Sony tc-377 -- playing slow after belt change

Fellow R2Rs...

Last night I changed the belts for my Sony TC-377 player... everything went smoothly, but when I play it now, it seems a little slow.

Any ideas how to fix this -- besides letting it loosen with time?

You may need to get in there and tweak the speed up a little bit. If you have a calibration tape, or any tape with a definative tone, or pitch that you can use as a recorded reference (hell, anything goes. A long, sustained guitar note, an organ chord, whatever.) Play it back, and compare it to a reference tone generator, either on a metronome, or an electronic keyboard that you know is in tune, and compare by ear as you tweak.

I own a TC-366, but I haven't messed around with it enough to know where the speed tweakers are located. None of the tweakers are labeled to begin with, so not having a manual, I just use it solely for playback. It's still working strong, so there.

AS for the location of this tweaker on YOUR machine, couldn't tell you. Manual should show you, or somebody else more knowledgeable than me.

Any chance the spindle has both 60 and 50 Hz poitions and that it got on the other?


A tight belt should not slow it down.

Thats the only thing that jumped into my mind.

Muckelroy is right. The new belt is usually tighter and will usually slow down the capstan a little.

It's slower now but maybe it's also now at correct speed!

But the belt also needs to be correct. ie: not too tight or it will cause premature wear of bearings and possibly even wear out the motor. Best to check the machine with a speed tape before making any other changes.

Well, I took it apart again last night... just made sure everything was right... cleaned the path and then put it back again...

Pow -- all is working well... sounds great -- takes about a second to kick in to 7.5 ips... and it stays. I have checked all tapes -- pre-recorded and ones I made and the machine seems to be fuctioning correctly,

Guess the belts just needed 24 hours to expand. And wow, were the old ones wore out!
