Okay, I just done and went and did it. Bought a J Station. Have my little Mackie 1202. Fruity Loops. Sonar XL. Waves plugin's. Have my custom built stratocaster and my Ovation bass (the J Station has 3 bass amp models on it....). I do have a ART preamp and a AKG C 1000S, but no vocals here, so didn't use them. That kind of thing will be coming up soon as I get some more material together.

This is nothing serious. I just copped a guitar part from another song I am in the process of arranging and did a quick little 3 hour recording here. Spent about 20 minutes mixing it in Sonar, and spend about 3 minutes adjust the L1 over the mix in Wavelab to boost a little volume.

Let er' rip. Here is my first OFFICIAL home recording I have done on a computer based system using .wav file drums and an amp modeler. It sucks compared to what I can do with some real gear, but I thought I might put this here little diddy up just to show that INDEED I am one of the brothers now with a little cheap home studio setup! ;) I can now OFFICIALLY empathize with home recorders now that I am doing it....;)

On another note, here is the final mix of something I posted last week. The client came in and wanted to do a few things different. Some for the good, some, well, they at least got what they wanted. :D I just mixed this as a favor to the studio owner.

Enjoy!

Ed

Dude, that's pretty bad.

I like the guitar sound, but those canned drums have got to go.

There. Now you've officially been initiated! :) :) :)

Welcome.

Man, you are telling me! I got a butt load of drum samples for Fruity Loops, and they are really suck! None of them sound very wholesome. Not sure who the heck sampled them, but they sound like something for a Poison song of something.

It has inspired me! I will be recording a great sounding DW kit here pretty soon and I am going to get some samples from it. All from 24 bit samples! Once I get them all edited up, I will be offering them up to people to use. Hell, I just might make my own drum sample CD to sell....:)

Great idea! A lot of the stuff out there is crap.

(hint: free is good ;) )

I wish my landlord would offer that up! ;)

LOL...I hear ya. Try sinking $500/mo into a 1 bedroom apartment while paying for college. That's something I'll never miss when I move into the "real world."

Since we all have to do something to pay the rent, getting paid for recording is pretty good deal, though. I'm guessing there have been times when you've had to remind yourself of that when you get your paycheck. ;)

I think chessrock was gonna offer to "master" that for ya Ed! ;)

:D :D

that metal tune is fun to lead over. .. reminiscent of some metallica i think.

I'm sure you'll make something pretty cool with that.

For a guy with experience, you can probably do much better than most of us with a 'cheap home studio setup'

Dude, I don't consider Waves cheap. LOL!

Well .. your little home studio thing will probably help you lay down some raw material before you head on to the studio. I'm sure it'll lead to lots of inpsiration.

Even though you have a home setup, can I ask why you chose Fruity Loops as opposed to Properllerhead's Reason ?

I went with the software the studio I work at has.

Waves IS cheap! Check into what real Class A eq's, compressors, and limiters cost! But also, listen to how the Class A boxes SOUND in comparison.

That is a problem with a lot of people getting into audio these days. They use plugin's that pretty do the job, but sterelize the sound tremedously. But these people wouldn't know it because few around here have had the opportunity to do a lot of sessions with Class A gear, so they don't really have a basis to compare. Does the Waves stuff work okay for work up demo's on my home computer? Sure do! Would I try to use them in place of hardware? NO WAY!

Yeah, it was sort of fun trying to come up with modes that worked well over the song for soloing. I haven't played guitar much at all for about 5 years now, almost not at all for the last 3 years, so it was a challenge to try to lay this crap down! Screwed the pooch on the solo, but what the hell. I just wanted something to play around with Sonar with. The guitar part is actually going to go in a song that is sort in the Gravity Kills vein. I just need to find some synth sounds that I am happy with so I can start putting it all together. Be assured I will post the song once I have something...;)

I guess you're right.. but it's gonna take me a while to find out and try it for myself.

When we have enough material (.. and our drumer gets electronic drums so that we can actually play in an appartment), we may just head on down to Blue Bear Sound and listen for ourselves. :-)

sonusman,

I tried playing your song and my browser crashed 5 times in a row. I hate quicktime. It tried to play before it was fully downloaded and crashed everytime. I see other people have gotten to hear it so it must be something I'm doing. I have a high-speed connection. Can you give me any help?

Thanks bro!

right click on the link and go to "Save As".

You can save it to your hard drive and play it in Winamp.

??? cool ??

double take!
you downloaded it and it crashed your player??

That's weird dude. reboot.

Thanks tvaillan, that worked. Unfortunately, I have to go to work now but I'll be back later.

Thanks again for the quick response. ;)

Indeed! I am interested TOO in hearing just about ANYTHING from ol' Blue Bear Sound! Of course, he doesn't really have any Class A gear.....

Ed

sonusman, I use a J-Station to record my bass guitar except I run the guitar through a SansAmp Bass DI first, before the J-Station. It gives me a bit more eq control and warms up the sound. I just finished a metal mix that has my new Fender jazz bass recorded this way on it, It's called Metal Mix 1. Also my song, Hard (Blues) Rock Jam, I recorded a Fender P-Bass the same way. The guitar tracks were recorded direct from the Fender Cyber-Twin and the drums are a Zoom 234 (but sound better than some might think.) They're all available on mp3 at http://dabluesman.com

sonusman, I like your mix, it sounds kinda like Megadeath and yeah those fruity loops do not sound all that great.

How about a working mix of the MixFest clip (Here Again) that I did a couple of months ago....

I've since done a punchier version for the actual submission, but I also like this "smoother" one too...

Bruce

Hey, you rock, Ed! Whatcha been doing wasting all your time on engineering? :D

I have seen the future, and it tracks at home. :)

Those tinpot drums gotta go, though. :D Thing about Fruity's drums is this - Fruity has only one folder of 'real' drum sounds. The rest of it is beats - percussive sounds that aren't meant to sound like drums - and they sound way better than the 'real' sounds. Try to make Fruity sound like drums, and it's tears - the result screams that you're trying and failing to come up with a real drum sound. Let Fruity sound like synth sounds, and you've got something better.

"I hate quicktime."

Sabbath - of course you do, but not as much as me.

"Of course, he doesn't really have any Class A gear....."

There are three grades of homer gear: crap (nanoverb), okay (C1000s), and great (Mindprint Envoice).

Then comes pro gear. So, how many grades of pro gear are there? (Class A and Bruce's? :D)
