Hi guhlenn,

The Sony mic you bought was probably made in the 70s. It is a battery power electret condenser, just unscrew the bottom part of the mic to reveal the battery compartment. This is great cardiod condenser for mid volume recording because The max SPL is 125dB and the self noise is a little high. I have three of these mics and i use them almost every session.

I have found that there best placed as a close cymbal mic (not too close). There especially good on hihat n ride cymbal, or to sweeten a quieter crash.
I've also had good results using them in a multimic set up on lower to mid volume guitar cabs as long as your phasing is set to your aquired taste.

Their sound and freq response is quite clear, not being to brittle or to warm. That's what makes them so good for cymbals. Once you find their sweet spot (distance) you'll see what I mean. Nothing but good things to say about these vintage mics.

If you want more info, just ask. I actually have a manual for mine, and I have the original brochurefrom the seventies.

Wow, thanks for your reply. I had to wait 8 (!) years. :)

But I do have the mic somewhere, forgotten about it really, but will get it out and try it on hihatt and ride. THanks!

ps. If you are able to send me a copy of the manual, that woudl be great (pdf or something?)

Regards,
G
