Had a system problem about 2 weeks ago and decided to reinstall everything. Sonar 2 XL was working okay. Reinstalled Win 98SE and the first program (other than a couple of small utilities, winzip etc) I installed was Sonar 2XL because it was kind of difficult to get going on the old system. It wouldn't open, just profiled the audio board and hung up. I e-mailed support and got a blerb about uninstalling completely and reinstalling. I did that... to no effect.

I e-mailed them again and got a blerb about shutting off a file in the sys folder of windows and reinstalling with no other plug ins (like Sound Forge). At the time, I had added Cool Edit Pro, which has no directX plug-ins of it's own, and it was not opening either.

The second fix from Cakewalk caused the system to crash. I decided it seemed like a DirectX problem becuase Cool Edit was getting hung up on the scan plug ins part. So, I went to DirectX Diagnostic and it said everything was fine. I turned off direct draw and voila..... Cool Edit and Sonar both opened. It was late at night, so I shut off the computer and when I came home from work the next day, Cool Edit was fine.... Sonar wouldn't open.

I went to the DirectX trouble shooting process and followed directions.... only thing I hadn't done was to slow down graphics acceleration (will fine tune the computer later.... just trying to get stuff installed and opening now)... so I did that (slowed down graphics acceleration). As I was reinstalling everything, I had already downloaded the latest drivers to my graphics card... Nvidia GForce2 MX MX400.

Since then, I have added MidiQuest, a midi based editor librarian for my synths and Acid.... both open and work fine. Sonar still won't open.

For details, I have a P3 800, 512K ram, 2 SCSI drives for music and an IDE for backup, use Frontier Design Soundcards.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Take Care.

How did you do the Windows 98 SE reinstall? Did you start with a clean hard drive or did you reinstall it on top of the old intstallation?

Thanks for the thought.... the Sonar 2 CD won't let you install Sonar without DirectX 8.1 so it installs it for you. Also, I thought that it might have been corrupted somehow, so did download the Microsoft stuff and reinstalled it..... unfortunately..... no effect.

Thanks and take care.

Sorry, regarding AlChucks thought..... did a low level format of the hard drive then a clean install of 98SE.

Again, thanks

You might wanna try uninstalling the video card drivers or going back to the previous version to see if that works...and make sure the audio card drivers are updated and installed correctly ..my understanding from tech support is that what Sonar is looking for immediately during start up..had the same problem with Sonar 1 .

That's an interesting thought.... and I hope not it... I am currently using the latest drivers for both. I have older versions of my sound card drivers, but when the computer store sold me the comp, they didn't give me the drivers for the video card. When I decided to reinstall everything, I downloaded the latest drivers from the Nvidia site for the card..... don't think I have older drivers for it..... hmmmmm, will try older drivers for the card though.

Thanks

Try to install it in friend's PC. see what happens. could be the Windowz...

Okay, as if this was possible, it is getting stranger (and something about the windows install is a good thought). I was downloading a bunch of stuff overnight (the old 56K running about 26K) and bingo everything opened this am.... Sonar everything.... no problem.... hurray. Well I installed some stuff (like a finale free patch fix etc) and had to reboot...... the only thing that would open was CEP2.0...... Acid, Sonar, Translator..... nothing else opened. What the?#%$#?&*&?!?)?*?+

So, I figured it was something screwy...... couldn't get them to open all day. Just downloaded a huge zip file.... took about 3 hours..... when it was done..... everything opens......?!?!?!

So, I have just spent about an hour mucking around in Sonar.... seems to work fine. I am about to close and reboot.... just to see what happens.... but my guess...... nothing will open. Just like when my car had trouble with the independent traction light.... until I took it to the dealer.... then, no problem.

Anyway, I appreciate any ideas and thoughts. I was wondering, I had some problems with installing the Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection...... It shows that it is installed and working, but even though it showed that earlier (no yellow ! in Hardware Devices, it said, upon checking the device, something was not installed cust???) I tried reinstalled from two CDs, the Win98 and Drivers that came with the card...... but I still had to click out of a file it couldn't find. I now get an error message when I boot that is that devices pointed to by vnetxup.vxd, dfs.vxd, and vredit.vxd are not there. It lets me in, then tells me that msnp.dll is missing and networking is unavailable.

I did a net search about these and these were some errors often found in Win95. I one solution a couple days ago, deleting the references to them in regedit..... the machine asked me some identification question on boot, but no more pop up error screens. However, I decided this still may be the problem, so tried to reinstall, and apparently there is some file the installer is looking for that I don't have...... (it tells me to insert the Win98 disk, I do, then it says it is the wrong disk!!.... I insert the disk that came with the Micropc that supposedly has the drivers, and it tells me to insert the Win98 disk.... go figure).

Soooo, could a network problem do this? I feel like I have to resolve it, because it is the only thing I can think of at this time. Since sonar opened and seemed to work fine...... loaded tassman even!, I'm feeling it is not the program, but something in Win.....

AAARRRGGGHHHH, really, I just wanna make music!

Thanks for the help, time and support.

If you are trying to install a network card..this may very well be the problem...I tried the lynksys in my puter and went through nothing but a nightmare...first off the drivers wouldnt load the same way on any separate occasion ..i ended up reformatting my hd at least 4 times before i gave up on the network card deal...

the network card absolutley didnt want to share IRQ,s with anything else..the symptom was..every function in my puter slowed down to an absolute crawl..

My system has a Scsi controller card w 2 scsi HD,s 2 IDE HD,s, two audio cards and an agp video..the lan was the least important so i gave up on that idea..

You may want to consider reformatting or even "zeroing" the HD..i use this neat utility called zero fill to perform that..reload the OS and add the hardware components one at a time just to isolate the problem..take your time and install one hardware piece at a time..with only the drivers each piece needs ..then let Sonar be your first software program install..I suspect that this not a Sonar issue but a hardware conflict

By the way, I hope we are talking about Windows 98SE? Correct?
and not the original Win 98..

Good luck!

It truly erases everything on the hard drive by filling it with zeros..whereas reformatting does not erase the hard drive..

I wouldnt say that zeroing is necessary..but it will recover lost clusters also..that the hard drive wont write to for one reason or another..i dont have a link but if you did a search i think you can find it if youre interested.

Well, I have severa SCSI hard drives and added an IDE for storage. Until now, I have been blissfully ignorant of network controllers..... in a nutshell, what do they do and what would happen if I diabled it?

Thanks for the info, it is starting to get a bit over my head, so I will check this out with my computer guy.

Take Care

Hi RJT,
I used to have this problem with CWPA 9 and win98se. It all started going wrong after I installed another program. I suspect its a dll system problem9ie old dll files overwriting newer ones on the system). It might be rectified by upgrading to ME/2000 or XP. I had to do a clean reinstall to rectify the problem myself.
