I'm getting a half second delay on the sounds recorded. Recorded a drum machine on audio 1. Tried to record acoustic guitar on audio 2 but there is a delay which makes it impossible to play along with the drum track or listen with headphones while playing. What am I doing wrong?

What soundcard? OS? CPU?

You're not doing anything wrong but the sound chip is not up to it. Get a real soundcard and look for something with low latency, preferably in the sub 5ms region.

will this delay happen with any software? If I use a simpler 4 or 8 track programme will I still get this problem?

Turn of Input Monitoring! (Or check if it's on... Options -> Audio -> Input Monitoring, de-select any drivers if they're selected).

I don't know if this is the sollution for you, but if you're using Sonar 1, I think Input Monitoring is on by default...

As moskus said, this is the result of listening to the sound AFTER it has been processed by your computer. The delay is the result of the time it takes your system to do the processing, and depends on your overall system (processor speed, memory), the sound card you are using, and the drivers for the sound card.

It has very little to do with the software you are using.

Easiest way around is to turn off Input Monitoring (see moskus' instructions) and find a way to monitor through your hardware monitor. e.g. off your mixer.
