Sonar Upgrade Economics?

Hi,

I've been a Sonar owner for less than a month. I bought 3SE because that's what I could afford, but I'd really like to upgrade to PE.

On the CW website, one can upgrade to 4PE as a registered 3SE user for $229. I also have a letter I can send to get 4SE for free. But at CW, the upgrade to Producer 4 from Studio 4 is $299, or $70 more. I don't understand this, but that's what it says.

Had I been able to afford 3PE, I wouldn't even be worried about upgrading right now, as I'm still just trying to learn how to use the software properly. But I really want the Producer eq and compression features.

So I'm thinking I'd be better off forgetting about the free 4SE altogether, and going straight for 4PE. Or should I wait? I'm not cheap, just working poor. As it stands now, it will be November until I have the $229 unless I borrow it. How likely is it that the price will hold that long?

Thanks,

Michael

Personally I would take the free upgrade to 4.0 and use the money to buy serparate eq and compression software. One of the difficulties I have found with Sonar's plugins is that you can only use them in Sonar. (That's assuming you are not interested in the VSampler program that comes with the Producer edition, as well.)

BTW, if past history is any guide, the upgrade pricing should hold for the life of the product. In fact, you might even see them run "specials" on those prices on occasion.

Thanks for answering. Since I have Kontakt, I wouldn't think I need the VSampler, but I could be wrong. I'm still working to develop a soft-based DAW environment, and don't know much about it. What would be good sound compression software?

The PSP Vintage Warmer is on my wishlist, I think.

BTW, I don't mean to sound self-pitying about money. I'm painfully aware that by today's global standards I am well-off. I'm only poor relative to the USA middle class standard, and that's OK with me. The fact that I have some food in the fridge, and can even think about exploiting this technology for artistic pursuits is something I am most grateful for.

Peace,

Michael

Ah, interesting. I missed that.

Since Quasar owns Kontakt already, he wouldn't need it anyway.

Nope, but I think it tips the scale to Studio for me...

I went with Studio on 3.0 and never regretted it.

IF I upgrade to 4.0, I will stay with Studio.

I am beginning to think I should simply concentrate more on the recording process itself, rather than worry about having the latest greatest software available.
