I'm running Sonar 1.3 with Audiophile 2496 (& SB Live Platinum - for Soundfonts) on W2K. When Sonar starts up I get a message:

"DirectShow Audio: One or more sound cards do not support stereo. The default audio format has been set to mono"

I've checked in Sonar and all the Audiophile Inputs are mono !!... I've tried uninstall & reinstall both the Audiophile & SBLive drivers but still getting the same message. (And even disble the SBLive drivers)... I'm kinda puzzled on this one. :(

Any inputs/helps are really appreciated !!!... Thanks !!

I believe this is a problem that is resulting from the SB Live drivers that you are using - and I'm guessing that you are using Windows XP.

What you need to do is to use the Microsoft drivers provided with Windows XP, rather than the Creative drivers.

I don't have the exact steps, but go into Control Panel/System/Device Manager and find the SB Live. Then when trying to update the driver, tell it to list ALL drivers and choose the one provided by Microsoft. That should fix the problem.

I have a similar setup (win2k). Indeed, SBLive is set to mono but I didn't even care to fix it since I only use it for soundfonts. Audiophile should be working in stereo. Did you install the latest drivers?

ah

When I had exactly the same set up, the SBlive made everything record in mono - even CoolEdit. You might get stereo with the audiophile if you deselect the SBLive drivers in the options/audio menu and rerun the profiler. This is such a common problem that I'm amazed Cakewalk haven't included it in the FAQ on their website - odder still, the SBlive is shown as an example in both the Manual and the Sonar Power book. I can only assume that they hadn't tried it under W2k when these books were written.

The only solution I found was to use the alternative drivers from www.kxproject.com
However, soundfont support with these is only basic at present.

There is no prospect of Creative ever fixing this bug - this last driver update was november2001.

My "Final Solution" was to replace the SBLive with a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. The DLS midi synth sucks but I get good sound with directX games and Sonar gets another 2 stereo line ins and outs - giving me 8 mono in and out if I count the Audiophiles s/pdifs.

I don't miss soundfonts - I always thought it was a good idea badly implemented - and Sonar doesn't work with them properly anyway. There is always the option of using a DXi player/sampler.

Thank you all for your helps ...

I have the "latest" drivers for both of the cards... but I believe that you're are correct about the SBLive driver causing this problem. I really don't care if the SBLive Inputs are mono, it's the other way around -- The Audiophile inputs are all mono !!!

Let me re-install the "older" SBLive drivers (from the CD) to see if it solves this problem.

I'd still like to use SBLive for SoundFonts since it doesn't effect the CPU usage as much as the DXi (although I should take a look at the DXi sometimes)...

Is there limitations of how much SF you can load in DXi ??... Is it better in quality ...?? I think in Sonar 2, the DXi was upgraded ??

Once again thank you: dachay2tnr, audiohead & Jim Y
