Can someone tell me if I upgrade to Sonar 3 if I will lose my DR-008?

Anyway around this? What options will be available for me in S3 for drum samples and beat composition?

You will not lose your Dr-008 unless you completely uninstall Sonar 2.2. It's best to do a custom uninstall from the control panel/add remove programs. This gives you a show of all the files in Sonar 2.2 that you can uninstall. Simply highlight them all, then left click on the 30 or so files that have dr-008 in the filename so they are unselected (they are in the shared dxi folder). Click on uninstall. Then install Sonar 3.

Incidentally for anyone who has accidentally uninstalled the whole of Sonar 2.2. You may need to use the direct x utility from cakewalk site (or use a simple registry hack) in order to get Sonar 2.0 to reinstall with Direct X 9. Then patches for 2.1 and 2.2 can be applied (both of which have updates to the DR-008 I think). Then finally do the custom uninstall as I first described.

Johnhoe,

Does this mean you always have to start by installing Sonar 2, then uninstall everything except dr-008, and finally install Sonar 3?

What if Sonar 3 is already installed and you need dr-008?

It is this kind of thing I hate. I have several computer programs working this way where you have to do several installs in a certain order, apply patches etc. In fact, I keep a log of the whole setup of my computers, just to remember it all when upgrading the whole system.

Hi Tombuur,
I think the original
if I upgrade to Sonar 3
implied that he already had Sonar 2XL on his computer. This is why I suggested the original method of retaining the DR-008, whilst removing the actual Sonar 2.2XL program files. The DR-008 does not come with Sonar 3 and will not appear in the DXI list if you simply install Sonar 3. In other words the DR-008 DXI is part of Sonar 2XL and you have to have installed Sonar 2XL in order to have that DXI.
What if Sonar 3 is already installed and you need dr-008?
So if you want it now, just do a custom re-install of Sonar 2XL (Just tick the DXI instruments box and leave the other boxes unticked.)

No. I believe this can be done after installing Sonar 3 if so needed, using this partial re-install method. (We mean Sonar 2=Sonar2XL I presume)

Thanks,

Sonar 3 should start shipping from England tomorrow, and I preordered so I keep my fingers crossed for reception within a week. I do have 2.1 XL installed, so I will just keep dr-008 and delete the rest. Unless some of the new stuff will do the same job ??? Haven't used dr-008 in any projects, but I like the idea of designing your own drum kit.

Still, for the sake of future. I don't really feel secure about installing just a part of a program collection. Experience has taught me that they often install other things you never asked for and may actually overwrite newer drivers etc. Using the English MS Office, it used to give me problems when I tried to install the Danish dictionary and nothing else from the Danish version disk.

That's not what you're doing if you're just installing the DR-008. Then you are, in fact, just installing the DR-008. I've been doing this a long time, and it works. :)

I can understand that installing MS Office gave you hell. Of course, MS Offices installation program is designed that way. But just relax, this is Cakewalk you're dealing with. They're just a smarter group of people. :D
