I just read in Sonar Power that in order to burn a project to CD, it must be 44k and 16 bit. Does this mean I should NOT record in 24 bit (My Creative Extigy will support 24 bit)?

Thanks.

You'll find threads all over this board on this particular subject.

The general consensus is that you SHOULD record at 24 bits and 44.1. Any digital signal processing that you do to the mix will benefit from the higher bit rate. Dither to 16 bits as the last step before burning to CD - using a good dithering algorithm.

Read the Extigy spec more closely. I believe it will play back 24-bit audio, but not record at 24-bit resolution.

I checked Creative's Web Site. I found the following:

============================================
- High Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) exceeding 100dB using high linearity, low distortion 24-bit converters with resolutions of up to 96kHz

- 24-bit / 96kHz Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) for various analog inputs

- 24-bit / 96kHz Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) for 6-channel analog speaker and headphone output

- Independent 24-bit Analog-to-Digital Converters for Line and Microphone input controls to provide recording and mixing flexibility

- Supports Sony/Philips Digital Interface (SPDIF) format input signal of up to 24-bit / 96kHz quality
============================================

Should I presume from this, that 24 bit recording resolution is possible?

If so, can you suggest a program for dithering? Can Sonar accomplish it? If not, Wavelab? Sonic Fondry?

Thanks.

SONAR can dither form 24 to 16 bit with no problem. Just look at your SONAR Power book on page 98. It pretty much tells you how to accomplish it.
