I am looking for a good set of plugins for Sonar 2 xl. I am looking for something to improve or simplify mixes. I am pretty impressed with material I have heard that claimed to be home recordings made with a DAW.

Are there particular compressors or mastering software that work well?

I will primarily be recording guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Not too much keyboard stuff. My interface is Layla 24.

My budget is $250-400 USD. Is this even in the neighborhood?

Thanks. BB

The unfortunate story is that there is no one magic "Just add this plugin and you sound like a CD". At least if there is, I haven't found the link to buy it and it would probably cost mega-bucks anyway......

So said, Sonar XL does come with quite an impressive range of plugins to allow you to perform the basic, EQ, compression and "cool" type effects. These can go a long way if you spend the time to get to know them and how they operate.

From a mastering perspective, I was quite impressed with the range of functionality and flexibility in Izotope's Ozone and it looks as though the T-Racks Mastering software also works reasonably well, but is harder to control.

Other people swear by things such as Sound Forge and it's included array of tools which can be used for mastering purposes.

My advice would be to play with all the included plugins until you know exactly how they work and what impacts they can make on your songs. Ultimately though, the old maxim holds true, you can't polish a turd into a diamond. Get your original recordings as close to perfect as you can as this will reduce the amount of work you will need to spend both mixing and mastering.

Timeworks, the people who make the built-in compressor and EQ with Sonar also have quite a nice mastering compressor.

Also - make sure you check out demo versions - most of the big companies make them available and nothing beats testing these little beasties out before you commit the cash...........

Waves make a good plug-in collection - but again, it's how you use the tools not the tools themselves that make the major difference.

Let us know what you decide!

as previous stated their isn't any ONE tool that will do everything for u but the MOST versatile as well as best sounding plug-in i've encountered would be the PSP Vintage warmer...u need vocals to have more body and air it out a bit it'll do that...u need to add omph to ur drums it'll do that u need ur guitar to stick out more it'll do that

u need ur entire mix to sound more live it can also do that to an extent

its a compressor-limiter/Eq/warmer only costs 149.99

I never really ecpected a single tool. I was pretty impressed with what was included in Sonar2xl so I figured that there has to be some pretty hip stuff out there if they bundled something that sounded so good for free.

I am just trying to get up to speed with the rest of a piece of software that I have been using for so long. Honestly, I haven't purchased a single peice of recording software since I bought CWPA9 so I am behind the curve in that area. Sonar 2xl seems pretty powerful. I figured it might be time to play catch-up.

Thanks for the replies, BB

I know - me too....... I have been using CWPA9 and others for years but have only had my hands on Sonar for a short wee while.

Mmm, yeah - love it to death...

Check out Ozone - it's cool.

Have fun, post some songs!

Perhaps BBE Sonic Maximizer is what you're looking for. I think it's good one some mixes, but can be terrible on others... But still, I'm glad I bought it. ;)
