So get to work and quit jumping up and down......

The upside, I know how you feel. I was pretty excited when it showed up at my door. The program is so darn amazing and with a good set of plugins produces some great tracks.

The downside, in about 3 months when you've figured it all out you can then start producing some great recordings. Takes awhile to figure it all out unless you've owned a prior version.

Enjoy your toy!

ive got sonar xl 1.3.1, so im a little bit comfortable with it. it definitely is a fun program to work with so far. im loving the individual folder thing!!!!:D :D

I've been using Cakewalk since at least version 2....midi only, and audio versions since Pro Audio 5... went to Sonar 1 and all of it's patches and now Sonar 2. They all work pretty easy...well...after you've used their software for so many years! I didn't go for XL, not this time. My PIII-700 doesn't like softsynths much...

after i upgraded to SONAR 1 XL from home studio 9, my system, which was a P-3 700Mhz, 256Mb and a 20Gb H.D., didnt want to perform all of the nice things that SONAR had bundled with it. i got mad and said i might as well go for the best performance i can. i spent all of my money and am now running an ASUS P4T-E, P-4 2.2Ghz, 512 Mb and a 60Gb H.D.
everything is now loaded into a nice rackmount case, with the mixer on top. im slowly making my junk look more professional.
now if i could only do something about my music...

hey tntkemp, maybe someday ill ask you a few million questions about Midi.....
i really want to get into midi, but am terribly scared of it.

I'm sticking with 1.3.1. Apart from per-project folders - there's nothing I want in 2.0.
When they improve the midi side a bit...

1: Metronome preview for rehearsing to (Sonar is the only DAW that won't play unless you record or have something recorded!)
2: Clip "auto loop until" feature that saves you having to copy parts thru when you dont yet know how long to copy for.
3: Per port midi settings so you can dictate each ports echo and input filters - you can only select for one port as it is (I think?).
4: MTC/SMPTE time code generation.
5: Incoming time code echo to selected output.
6: Transport MMC remote control when not under external sync.
7: Midi ports by name in options tabs rather than 0,1 etc.
.... I might jump.
Any more?

maybe you should write cakewalk and let them hear your suggestions.
like i said though, im not using it for midi. but i had the extra $$$, thats why i went for the 2.0. also, i was able to buy it at a great price.
$268.95!!!!!!
through this link-
http://academicsuperstore.com/marke...&nav_id=&cat_name=&Platform=&qk_srch=sonar 2&
all you need to be to make the purchase is a student, teacher, or have some sort of education id.
---$268.95!!!!!
cant beat that motherf*er with a stick!!!! i mean holy SH*T!!!

:D :D :D :D
thats less than half the price of SONAR 2 without the XL!!!!!
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I bought mine on ebay from a dealer unopened and unregistered for about that price. Maybe the best money I've spent.

Ya, I don't care much for the metronome system myself. It takes up to 20 minutes to get the metronome track recorded.

But compared to everything else it's capable of, that's minor. And ya, it has quite the learning curve if you're new to it. Always something new to learn, keeps it interesting!

Have fun with it.

...Yess !!!
Hurrrrry guys, upgrade your pocket, save more and more, go get 'em. Gosh, I've just got my 1.3, they release 2 XL. It's okay for me about the learning curve, but my pocket need more saving curve...
:D :D :D :D :D

I am waiting for my Sonar XL to arrive tomorrow. I am going to be using the XL/Aardvark Q10 setup. All this talk about a steep learning curve is making me a little nervous, though!!!

Good luck, spacedye! I hope you enjoy it.

If there's one piece of advice I can give to a new Sonar user, it's start by getting good sounding unedited tracks with your mics, etc. There are a ton of editing features, but don't rush into them blindly. I've recently revisited some of my first recordings and wished to God I had spent more time getting a good sound at the start. You can't make chicken soup out of chicken shit. If you get good tracks now, you'll be able to remix them better later when you know more about the tools. Before you know it you'll be whipping around the interface real second nature-like. And what fun it is. :D

can make chicken soup out of chicken shit------
wow LOL!!! the quote of the year!!!!!!!

cakewalk midi is easier to learn then the audio...just setup the track and record

I upgraded Cakewalk 9 to Sonar XL 2.0. It is da bomb!
I definitely have gotten my money's worth on their tech
support and calling my buddy for "how to". If you actually
buy the program so you can get help, and get the Sonar Power
book by Garrigus, your learning curve shouldn't be too bad.

Then you can actually make music and not spend time feeling
like an idiot because you can't get your software to do what you want it to do...

I agree that the book by scott garrigus is great!!! helped me a few times. but the book that caomes with sonar2 is pretty good also. its definitely clearer than the books that came with past versions of cakewalk products. maybe they had a few complaints.

Ya, I actually found the Sonar 2 manual to be more helpful than "Sonar Power" personally. But of course usage varies from user to user. They both make good travel reading material, except you become anxious to try out what you've learned! (I'm jumping on a plane today for Montana, which means no homerecin' for 2 WEEKS! How will I manage?)

i basically use it as a guide to explain to me what ive just found when i stumble across something new in sonar2. there is NO WAY i can read through that book and understand it without hands on. my attention span is definitely not that long.
i'd be napping after the first few pages. :D man i love this per project folder thing!!!!!

Key Words - Desktop Reference!

Once you get into reading 2,500 page manuals, the concept comes pretty quickly. Then again, it could be aclimation to really shitty manuals. :)

Imagine a book six feet wide. That is what I had to learn over a year. Mess with the program, screw it up, check the glossary, and move on. That's how Garrigus wrote the book although he took notes as he screwed everything up.

If you try to read the thing from cover to cover, you're gonna fall asleep after 20 pages.

I got sonar 2 as soon as it came out,I'd have to say my plates pretty full at this moment.
I just wonder what the next upgrade is going to have in it,most if not all of my needs were answered in the last two upgrades.
I did'nt go for XL as my toybox is pretty full .

I'd wager they will improve the wave editing features. Something like instant zoom with out having to scale in. There are shortcuts now but clicking with a mouse would be nicer.
