I went to a Sonar 2.0 clinic on thurs at Sam Ash and I thought that Sonar 2.0 XL is a great deal for the upgrade. Even though I bought the basic version of Sonar in last December, I don't feel like Cakewalk is "ripping me off" like some for the posts that I have read on here just because I just bought it a few months ago. Cakewalk is always working on making thier software better. I am glad they keep working on the music software that I use most.
I have seen the Timeworks Compressor and EQ for mastering and I think that it's AWESOME. Sonar needed to have some mastering tools. And FXpansion's DR-008 virtual "drum machine" is great too. ( http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SR/SR2-SRXL.html )
In fact, FXpansion DR-008 was just was reviewed in COMPUTER MUSIC magazine ( http://www.computermusic.co.uk/main.asp , this British mag is my best subscription, better than Electronic Musician, Keyboard and Desktop Musician mags) in the May 2002 issue and BEAT all the others, even NI's Battery. Here were the scores: 1 is worst, 10 is best.
NI Battery = 8
Waldorf Attack = 8
Steinberg LM4-MKII = 5
FXpansion DR-008 = 9

Finally, amongst the other modifications Cakewalk has included 2.0, one of them stands out. Sonar has a better way of file handling. When you save a song, you have the option to make a new file folder and Sonar will put all parts of your song in that file folder, even audio. Makes backing up songs easier.
I am told you can buy the Timeworks Compressor, EQ and FXpansion's DR-008 individually from Cakewalk and pay well over twice the amount of money over the upgrade price. For the upgrade from the basic Sonar 1.3 to the Sonar XL 2.0, $199 is not that much.
I'll buy the upgrade.
By the way, after the one hour clinic demo, the was some guy come out of the room and says "Pro Tools is still better at editing". I was thinking that this guy was nuts for saying that. It was funny too because the Pro Tools guys see the power of Sonar. Between Sonar and Pro Tools, there is a still a huge price difference between them. Let's compare "apples to apples", please.
