I am running a behringer UB1202 with SM57s into my SB Audigy card using sonar 1.0 and audio studio gen 6, the recordings sound nice but there is still a hiss that I can't get rid of and I don't understand how to use the featured compressor/limiter/gates effects, when I apply light gate, I lose the track. What should I do. Will better mic preams help or is this a problem I can fix with what I got.

Compressor or Limiter is not designed specifically for noise reduction. Gate reduces noise but only when there is no signal input. Anyway talking about compression and limiter, you are actually boosting the signal level, so your noise will actually increase mostly. I am not going to explain what compression and limiter does cos it is too much to explain everytime, there are so many good articles on compression in this forum, do a search and you will understand what I mean. I am not sure Sonar1.o has a noise reduction plugin, but you could try cool edit or soundforge or Magix, somethnig like that for this.

my guess

the hum first comes from the behringer pre and is coupled by the audigy's noise..

Well can someone name a card that will be relatively inexpensive and not have extra noise and/or if I get a dedicated mic preamp instead of behringer will it remove the hiss?

or maybe I could just get a de-hisser or a noise cleaner? Do they do the trick for the most part? Does anyone know where I can get a free one? I guess buying something like the magix studio deluxe gen 7 would be my cheapest alt (I've seen it for $20-40)

You could always get a de-hisser or something like that, but I think the problem is your chain. Maybe the UB1202 or the Audigy is to blame. Have you checked your cables? A better mic cable might help.
