Well decided I needed to get rid of a few items. Last time I moved opened my eyes to how much stuff I had and decided I didnt want my wife or me to have to deal with again.
So I put my last 388 on the ebay to sell with pickup only.
I had just used it two weeks ago and thought well since its going to get picked up this weekend I will check it out just to make sure it was ok before the guy drives 135 miles for nothing.
Sure as heck I turn it on lift the right arm and no capstan movement and no reel movement.
So as I get back on paypal and send him his 475.00 back all I can say is

SHIT!

...God.

The Lord is watching over you. :)

The Mighty Smiter has smitten your 388 until you come to your senses and vow to keep it. Once you do it will work fine. ;)

WOW! I was just gonna say the same thing, only worded differently. :D

Divine intervention, indeed....

Keep the 388, Gary.:)

No not really Dan. I played with it some the other day but didnt have any luck. I have been sending gear out the door like this is Kmart the last few days. I just am not sure what to do with it but I am leaning toward parting it out. I just do not have the energy to drive clear to chicago to drop it off and then drive back to pick it up. I would have 12 hours in the car and two days tied up in doing it. Not to mention having to drive in a city I regard as the Arm pit of the world. I would have a 200.00 repair bill and gas would be 140.00 in to get there, And who knows how much it will cost to feed the old lady.:D And then there is the posibilty she will want to stop and visit the inlaws while we are up there.:(
Heck Dan thanks for asking now that I think about the negetives that go along with fixing it you have made it easy for me to decide what to do with it. ;)

Gary,

I'm afraid if you start parting it out you might get struck by lightning or something. In fact I’m hearing some thunder rolling in right now ... so maybe I should just buy it and come pick it up. :)

Are you still living in the same area… Henry’s old stomping grounds? ;)

Hey Gary, thanks for the update. Yeah, all that plus the in-laws, alone, would probably warrant not going through with it.:eek::D:D

Tim, are you really in the same area are Herm? It may indeed be worth a drive to pick it up and do a deal with Gary. Man, you always wanted a 388 and I'd love to see you own one, finally ... I'm sure you can do a 'Dr. Zee' on it and resurrect it from the dead.:D

Hey guys, I can see a deal here.:)

Ever since I first saw a 388 I thought it was one of the coolest pieces of gear ever built...am I correct that there really isn't anything else like it?

Narrow format yes, but all those analog VU's and the eq section is really sweet...I think stacked pots are cool. Onboard dbx and SMPTE syncable to boot...really cool.

I stop and look everytime one comes up on eBay, but with a 58, 48, another 48 parts machine on the way, 8 dbx 150X's, RC-51, ES-50, ES-51...ummm...no...

You're quite right that there's nothing else like the 388. It is one of a kind design and I also have one. Picked it up locally some time ago, after waiting and waiting for one to show up.... Wouldn't part with it now, despite having a few other recorders too, including the 48-OB. The 388's mixing section alone is worth the $500 I paid for it. Don't get me wrong, I love the recording section too and the all-in-one design. It feels like you're in a cockpit of a 747, working with the 388.:D
