Me so not so smart. This all looks interesting and sounds like critical info. So what's a home recordist to make of it?
Re: Alan smart is very smart Hey
So I emailed Alan about my Allen heath Saber console woes.
ie lack of headroom and punchy low end.
his answer is eye opening.
"One other issue I feel strongly about, which is seldom given the credit it deserves, and is central to your Allen and Heath (and any) Console, is that of output drive capability. Most manufacturers use op-amp outputs, and most of these while looking OK feeding a test set at their factory, degrade rapidly as you connect them to any significant load, length of cable, and in the case of a stereo bus output, more than even ONE destination....... Slew rate, Low frequency prformance, Headroom, Distortion, Square wave
performance, drop off rapidly. So, the C1 had an improvement to it's outputs for this, but in the C2 I changed to discrete push-pull outputs, with markedresults, rendering the C2 largely immune from abuse at the outputs. if you could structure your signal path to use a C2's outputs to feed your 2Tracks/dats etc. I'd say this would definately strengthen the low end performance"
Now I know some more reasons why It's hard to make mixes sound as good as a stuff done on Neve's, SSL etc.
The Allen Heath performs great for a console under 10K
It's just frustrating when you are trying to make a record sound as
big as radiohead, teenage fanclub etc.....
I am saving my pennies for the Smart C2
