Hey guys...I'm building a house right now and I'm putting a home theater in the bonus above the garage. I thought about going to the John L Sayer's forum with this but figured I'd start here for some general advice on treatment of this area.

First, a bit about the room. Below is a picture of the room looking down into it and my plan for furniture placement. About 5 feet up the wall, the wall angles inward toward the room at about a 50 to 60 degree angle. Pretty typical of a bonus room.

Now...the area in the picture is not the ENTIRE area. Behind the area in the picture is more room but I have a pool table going there. That area has a straight regular wall on the left side and more angled wall on the right (when looking down at the room as in the picture).

The sound system is going to be a 7.1 system with front towers, a center channel, and a sub. There will be side wall mount speakers firing directly at the center chair. And finally, I will have some rear speakers hanging from the ceiling firing down at the center listening position. Eventually I will move to a projector but right now, it's a 73" DLP HDTV.

So...any ideas for treatment? I'm thinking about doing bass trapping in the front of the room all the way up to the ceiling, following the angle of the walls. I am then thinking about putting treatment at the reflection points. I am also CONSIDERING stradling the wall with some treatment where the wall starts to angle but I'm not sure what good that would do. Finally, I'm also CONSIDERING putting a cloud over the main listening position but might not do that just yet because I'm not sure how low my projector will hang.

Thoughts?

Home now so I'll go ahead and post the room per the actual plan.

The usual stuff, man. Get the four corners, floor to ceiling with bass trapping (superchunks work great there), then 6" bass traps on the back wall and 4" broad band panels everywhere else. For HT, the front wall should probably be as dead as possible to avoid screwing with the center channel information.

The big deal with 5.1/7.1 (and beyond) is speaker placement and receiver calibration. If the speakers aren't placed accurately it leads to big imaging and/or lobing issues.

Thanks for the tips, Frank. As you can see from my second picture, I don't really have 4 corners to work with but I'll treat the best I can. I'm going to follow your advice and treat that front wall pretty well. I'll also hit up the usual first reflection points.

After I get my projector, I'll start thinking about the cloud.

I think my basic goal is to generally clean up the sound so that it's not muffled and I can clearly hear dialog and such. Some things I've noticed with other surround sound HT systems in untreated rooms is that they have to crank the volume to clearly hear certain things. Makes me think that there are possible nulls or something in the room preventing clear sound. That's mainly what I'm trying to address here.

If you have any more advice in relation to that, I would more than welcome it. What you've already said has been beneficial.

If you don't have any vertical corners then there's always the wall/ceiling corners...those are just as good. If you get the 4" panels up at the reflection points and the front wall and the 6" panel(s) on the back wall (closet), then that'll make a HUGE difference in terms of the overall clarity in the room. I'd hold off on a ceiling cloud...that's not usually one of the things I'd do in the first phase with a home theater. Get the projector up, do the rest of the treatment, and then see where you are in terms of line of sight and room clarity.

Mucho appreciation, Frank!

btw, those are Superchunks in the front corner, and 5 2'x4' panels of 4" 703 stradling the ceiling apex, with a fabric/frame and LED strip lighting behind both. My computer isn't powerfull enough to Render these with lighting. :( But I think you get the idea:D

Oh, I'm still working on the other area, but I wasn't quite sure how the roof line affected the ceiling there. Besides, they hadn't delivered the Pool Table yet.................... oops, heres the delivery guys now
