someone please explain a trigger in simple terms

thank you. I'm trying to describe it to someone and I am a terrible teacher.
 
when a trigger is hit, it makes something react, like a sound module. So when you hit a trigger, it tells a sound module to play a certain sound.
 
A trigger is just a piece of piezo-electric quartz crystal. When you hit it, it generates a quick spike of electricity (around one volt for a few milliseconds if I remember right). The module detects that signal and then plays a sound.

You can get the crystal transducers at Radio Shack for a couple of dollars (item 273-073A in their catalog.)
