Too much fun. This is from a 16 (maybe 17) year old local girl. She came to me a few months back with some basic acoustic guitar songs and a pile of lyrics on paper. She pretty much let me take her songs in whatever direction I felt like as long as they were still the same basic song. So much more fun than just doing what your told by some know-it-alls :)
Some of this still needs to be retracked, so its not really mixed yet, but it doesnt sound bad at all in its current state. I programmed all the drums and wrote/played all the bass and piano parts, and did a little bit of arranging but not much. The song falls in at under 3 minutes. Perfect. I could use a little more variation on the root key, but overall, nifty little song.
Enjoy.
Its listed under Ashley Mims, 2nd song down.

i like it. the snares a nice sound -infact its relly nice. nice crack, not sure how much its suits this song (thats me being pickey) how did you get that sound? mic? conpression technique? whats the secret behind that sound? otherwise nice track. vocals are sweet - nice voice. some timeing issues but im a drummer i notice stupid things like that. played it to my brother (hes a guitarist) he didnt mention anything or say he noticed after i pointed it out. in fact maybe im imagineing it......

hi

these are comments from a complete amateur so ignore if you want!

yeah i did feel that there was some timing issues too (and i'm not a drummer). i don't know if it was intentional, like you were trying to play triplets or something. but i didn't really like it.

i think she's got a sweet "girly" voice, maybe a bit soft. you should bring her vocals up, EQ it so it stays out a little more. i can't really make out what she's singing. or maybe go lighter on the effects, it sounds you have some chorus or doubled vocals in there (is that right?). i think she would sound clearer if there was less of that.

Thanks dudes... I've had others comment on the timing issues as well. I think the problems are:
1) The original drums were more out than they are now.... we tracked scratch guitar tracks that were tight with the bass at the time..
2) tightened up the drums
3) retracked the guitars, but not the bass... I think the bass is throwing it off some.
4)Shes on ly about 16, not the tightest player in the world. Lots of potential there though.
5) I'm not a drummer yet :) I'm a guitar player
6) bass had a capo on it... yeah... really messes one up when you arent used to that.
This was all pre-pro, so hopefully it will tighten up. She has said she is sick of it and never wants to hear it again, so maybe it IS done...

How is the overall sound/mix?

That snare is a Sonor Delite with a mic on it, slightly compressed.

i think its a really good song actually, i listened to it twice !!

only thing is besides the timeing, is it seems a little messey and blurry in the mix at some points, i really dont know how to describe , nor am i an expert at anything but, just seems little messy sometimes...

sorry for the ramble... other then that, great song ! post up some more.

Remember that she's not legal until she's 18. I can't stress this enough to you perverts.

What would be proper? :)

Airplay quality..beyond demo..Hire a drummer, bassplayer and you play the main guitars ect. Not so much the recording quality as the performance.Vocals are good she has a good vibe in her vocals.Don't get me wrong its good ! :)

not gonna get involved in whats proper or not lol

and where im not in any position to be offering you mix advice ill say the song is
pretty damn cool. I hope to hear the finished version.
Take care
gary

Cool. Several more to come. I'm starting to think this might be one that could do something bigger in a year or two, given proper circumstance and a little luck.
Maybe I'll take up a spot in the band just in case ha..

She'll be knocked up by some kid who listens to rap and end up in a trailer court. Happens all the time.

question... what type of effect did you use on her voice?

nice voice and song. big plus there. the acoustic gtrs are really fighting each other timewise and almost disappear in mono, btw. the snare is really mid range lacking and tends to make the entire mix for some reason feel the same way. as a suggestion, you'll want to make sure the vocals are A LOT more defined than they are now...either by clearing up the mix or turning the track up...what ever works. she is WAY to buried.

supprised that you posted something with the timing as bad as it is. the core of the stuff is there, but this is a really rough mix, for sure. all the tracks need a little help with definition and their own place in the mix, rather than the wash of sound that there is now.

tube...keep the girl...she's got potential, but do up her tracks right.

Cool. The guitars are all her and she's not all that experienced. I'm not asking to take those over becuase I feel like I would step on her feet and since I've taken this song to a lot of new places already, if she feels she's lost control it might ruin it all. I think she still will get a kickass demo for a young girl in Ky even with some quirks :)
The timing issues, I'm pretty sure most of it is the bass. Its still the scratch bass from early on, which was played to scratches that werent very tight, by a bass player (me) that didnt really know what I was going to play on it yet. I really hope thats all that it is. I think I have some late snares here and there, as well as some kicks, but I think those will quantize out ok.
Yeah, I should have waited, but I'm kind of proud of the song and what we've done with it. Tried a lot of ideas out, and I htink we have a good song thats not too long. It could use a key change, but I think it flows well none the less. It sounds really good on all 4 of my systems though, clean and pretty clear, and the vocals are plenty loud on my end except at the very end where there is the addition of piano and backing vox on top of it.(You really think its a wash of sound? )
I just ordered a Bartolini pickip for my bass, and when that is sintalled is when I'l lretrack those bass lines. Hopefully that'll clear up the problem we are hearing.
Starting on 2 new ones of hers this tuesday. We did all the scratch tracks about a month or two ago, and we're just working on them one at a time as we have time or get ideas.

Sorry Alec, that effect is just a doubling chorus with about a 50% mix. I think I used the Sonar Chorus on it.
