REEK BROCK

MR. LAST WORD
I respect everyone's opinion in this forum. That said I need to know if I 'm going in the right direction on my beats.I'm getting a little frustrated and need to know if its my style or my sounds or something else all together.Don't hold back listen to the tracks i posted and rip em up if you have to.I don't want to shop them and end up embarassing myself.Thanks.

On the real Reek, let me ask how long you've been making beats (first of all)?

Your beats are improving, don't get me wrong, but honestly I don't think now is the time to shop around. Have you shopped your beats around to anywhere else besides this forum like maybe people who know you who would give you honest feedback?

I'm a real dude, so if I critique your music, it's honest criticism. Me personally, I don't think your beats are at the level they need to be to shop around to potential buyers. Think about this...if you shop around your beats at the wrong time, you might make a bad first impression on potentials. That's the last thing you want to do because first impressions are usually lasting ones and you don't want to be labeled wack because bad word of mouth spreads a lot faster than good word of mouth.

But like I said earlier, your skill is improving, but now it's time to take it to the next level. Right now I would say you're about 40% there man.

Is it the quality of sound, the sounds I use,Give me some feed back and tell me my best 3.

I think the quality isn't bad...but here's what you need.

I think intros and changeups in the track are a good thing. It keeps it from sounding the same for too long. Also, you should layer different sounds with the same notes. This helps beef out your melodies. Are you using straight hardware or software to make beats?

Listen to this to see more of an example of what I'm talking about...

This is the last beat I've made in a while.

I think that your intro, verse, and chorus should all be distinctive. There are some folks who use the verse throuugh the whole song, but a lot of them can't really pull it off like it's supposed to be.

As for best 3? The new one you did isn't bad, but it's missing what I'm talking about above that could make it a straight banger. I see where you did some changeups but it should totally alter the track and bring it back. You've gotten much better on drums by the way.

First off let me say the remix you did on Hit Em Hard was nicely done. Kill the hi-hats just a little bit and it'd be nicer IMO

Quiet Rage was one I could sit back and vibe to, so that one was a good job too.

There was another one I commented on a few weeks back I think, but it's not on your soundclick now but I remember it wasn't named but it sounded like sniper music....I was diggin that one too.

Thanks I need as much feedback as I can get.I need some different perspectives though.Any women want to comment?Young ,Old,different races just any one. This is something that I really want to do.Most of the people around me are telling me that I'm good but I think they're being nice.I respect honesty so If you don't care for them tell me why.It will be greatly appreciated.

Alright then...

I listened to your beats and this is what i got from them

1. your beats sound like what a producer like Emor Dre would give to their people to work with (not saying your of that caliber but the way they work is they will give whom ever a beat to work with, said artist will record something to it and then they will come back judge and critique the piece). By that i mean they add more sounds, make suggestions to the artist on what can be said differently to fully bring out the best in their tracks.

2. you need to learn balance for your beats (no easy task but attainable). Like really focus on what type of person/artist/group your catering to.

thats all ican really comment on. the rest is learning as you go (if only these forums were video forums then we'd all be able to share more knowledge)

in my opinion, if you are looking for your beats to sound professional, you need to add more, different sounds to each one. They need to be fuller and more complex, with perhaps more instruments. Look at Fieva's beat for example: not only does he have the typical hi hat/snare/kick drum layer, but he also added in some alternative percussion, like the reverse cymbal (i think) and that shaker thing. It gives the beat a bigger sound, and keeps the listener on their toes

Let me assure you all that these tracks are not finished. They will be finished when I get a potential buyer.I cant put full blown intros, change ups and especially my tracks with samples up.Thanks for the feed back so far .

Did you listen to all of them ?I know what you mean when you say add more different types of percussion.I tried that but it ended up not sounding right. Some things get lost when people rap to tracks.Sometimes less is more. There is no real perfect balance. No one has made the perfect track. We are all just trying to get as close as we can.I hear people say add stuff and take stuff out. Thanks for the feed back.

See the beats aren't full sounding Reek. Don't get discouraged because we're trying to help you get to the next level. Hell, it took me 6 months (and using different methods of making beats) until I could even get to a level I considered "decent". Trust me, you learn different things as you go along.

Another piece of advice I can give you is to listen to other people's beats and then try to dissect ones that you like. Try to figure out what instruments that are being used and what melodies and arrangements. This will help you further develop your own sound. I do this all the time with artists from here as well as mainstream beats that I hear and like. That helps me step my game up and also helps me learn a new trick or two as well.

If you need more help or critique, don't be afraid to ask any of us man.

Ok..i have listen to your work..and like everyone is sayin you have showed improvement and you go..which is good...you have you own original style and that is what is needed...add a few breakdowns and some change-ups.. dont worry about being complex unless you doin a R&B beat...KISS(Keep It Simple Stupid) is the best sayin in music right now period. You dont have to have a complex arrangement to have a hit track..

you wanna check you levels to make sure each instrument used is nicely places in the mix..layer some of the sounds not all(mostly the drums.. IMO) pan some instruments L or R to get then in the mix better..and check the volume of your tracks...I dont know what you use to make your beats..so this is some general info to use...

dont be afraid to use some Delay or a some amount or reverb on instruments or the whole track..

you want to create your own ID when it comes to making beats..make your beats..take a few days come back a listen to it and see if a certain instrument should be in there or not..you will be amazed at how many times you will change a sound until you find the one the fits just right to you...

also remeber you cant make everyone happy..someone will always find something to say..just do you cand keep improving on the next track to the next track with the pointers ant tips you get from everyone..

peace

Thanks for that.It is a style that I'm going for.I see I'm not that good at mixing yet so thats what I'm going to focus on.i don't want to do complex tracks its just not me.I'm not trained or any thing so trying to do that without knowledge wouldnt turn out good IMO.If I can get some heads knocking I'm good.If I can get someone inspired to rhyme I'm good. The best feeling I have gotten so far was when a dude I didnt even know started freestylin on my tracks almost as soon as he heard them.Thats my drive.I cant conduct an orchestra and I can barely play the keyboard period but i take my time and I know what sounds good to me.I'm gonna be a monster when i get a better soundcard, monitors, and some more sounds.Thaks again.

Thats all the really matters..is getting the heads to the bob..

keep doin you..

Lots of good responses so far.

I think better sounds would make a big difference...that's the main problem I hear. You got lots of originality in your beats, which is a good thing, but you're probably always gonna be in a position where you don't get too much interest. People want what's familar most of the time.

That's why it might be a good idea to try to learn how to do more conventional sounding beats too...then you could blend that with your style and give them something original and familar at the same time.

Good luck.

Samples bring that familiar sound to people.I have quite a few but I don't want to post them.Once someone starts rapping to them.It becomes their own. Some beats out shine the artist. Some people make beats that they didnt really intend for people to rap to.I wouldnt mind listening to beats without anyone rhyming.
