Hi when i record i use a mackie 1402VLZ into a yamaha 2816, but as ive been aquiring more mics and learning more , i have run into a problem. When in 24 bit mode and recording eight tracks simutaneously( which is what i do for drums), it cant play back any tracks. I need to be able to play back guitar and bass while recording a drum track, using all eight inputs. Any help would be appreciated.

Just curious: Why?

Well, how you do this does differ but 99.999% percent of all recording with live drums start with the drums. It's easier that way.

really i did not know that, but thanx, to answer your question i go through my mackie becase the preamps are good and they give my drums a much cleaner tone.

Also, since my mixer only has six xdr preamp inputs, i was wondering if they make y connectors for xlr cables. and if not, how can i make one?

Ah, so the Mackie preamps are (at least in your opinion) better. Interesting...

Of course you can make y-connectors for xlr cables, you do them just as you do any y-connector, but no, it won't give you more mic-inputs.

are you trying to tell me something, like maybe the preamps (which i cant find) on the 2816 are better than my mackie preamps?

No, I'm not saying that because I don't know. I was just a bit surprised. But now that you say that you can't find the preamps on the 2816, then I think it's definitely worth a try for you to find them, so that you can choose properly. Becuase the preamps are supposed to be quite good...

I don't have a 2816, so I can't help you finding them unfortunately, but I thought it was just a matter of plugging in the mic into the XLR in and turning up the input...

ya ithink its just turning up the gain, so basically the combination of both the yamaha preamps and the mackie preamps give me a great sound.

OK, cool. That probably means that the Mackie preamps are better, really, if you let them to the bulk of the amplification at least. Nice to know.

I'd think you could just monitor through the Mackie and not worry about playback from the Yamaha.

I posted too quickly...I thought you were recording everything else with the drums live.:o

Did you try bouncing everything else, maybe it can handle playing back one track?

What I meant by monitoring through the Mackie is to send everthing to the Yamaha for recording, but listen from the master outs of the Mackie. It's easiest if you have inserts on the Mackie. It should have some way of doing it.

But I didn't realize you needed to listen to a prerecorded track when I first posted.
