hey gents

I am looking for a device to connect to a delta 1010 so that i can basically plug in a bunch of mics at once. I know this is a preamp but i am trying to dumb it down as much as possible. I have been looking at the m-audio octane. What i don't understand is why do preamps have A/D converters?? i thought the sound card did this. For example, the delta 1010 has an A/D converter that can sample at 96 khz. On the octane webpage, it says that the octane can sample at 41 or 48 khz. Why would i want it to sample there at a lower frequency when i can get a more accurate sample though the delta? I would think that m-aduio would make a preamp that would suit its delta perfectly but it seems like they both perform the same jobs. Should i be checking out different preamps (perhaps the ones suggested in the 8 preamp thread)?

Also what exaclty does an ADAT lightpipe connect to? it says the octane uses it but i know that none of my gear has that connection. Is it a common connection?

Here's the octane webpage:

Thanks for the help

You are correct about the Mackie it contains the converters.
I wish I could give a review of it ..... but I'm waiting patiently to see if anyone else chimes in on the sound quality of it.
Looks as if it would be a perfect addition to my MOTU, provided the pre's offer a reasonable amount of quality sound and low noise floor.

Any comments on the Onyx 800R or the Onyx pre's in general?

hi
well in case anybody is interested, i got this email response from m-audio canada:

hi, the ADAT output is only necessary for ADAT cards. There are preamp outputs on the Octane for each mic input. Therefore 8 preamp outputs in total. These are balanced outputs therefore you can use a balanced cable(stereo cable) for each out to maintain the audio integrity and then patch it into the Delta 1010. Since the A/D conversion only needs to be done once you can allow the Delta 1010 to convert the analog signal into digital and thus record at 24/96 if required.

That makes sense. I will prolly go with the octane.
