Some Original Song Snippets

Here's some stuff from a CD I'm about to release. Recorded and mixed in Sonar at home, mastered professionally at a local studio. The style is folk-pop, with (I'm told) a little country thrown in. The equipment is a Guild D50, SM58, Alesis Compressor, Mackie 1202, Delta 44, some real drum stuff (hi-hat, snare, tambourine, rock shaker) and some MIDI toms, kicks, and bass, from a JV-35 and VE-JV1E expansion card. Yeah, I know, the C1 and 1202VLZ Pro are on the way. Had a post earlier in the marketing section, and got some excellent pointers for the next CD, but thought I'd test the waters here too. Will be happy to look at all comments, keeping in mind that this year long project feels more like an offspring than bits on plastic......

i just listened to a few of the cuts... pretty dern good... I noticed a bit of "proximity" on the vocals on "Who.mp3" maybe back off the mic a touch... or perhaps a touch of compression

The acoustic guitar sounds really great... nice bright, but not too much "string" strike-sound (guitars aren't percussion instruments!)

I liked the bass... was that a fretless bass? sounded pretty sweet... perhaps a bit more in the mid levels... i dunno... i generally prefer bass tracks to share some space with guitars... but that's just me.
 
Thanks for the comments. I compressed the vocals on "Who Knows Her Name" a little more than the others, in an attempt to get the low passages above the ocean sounds. Perhaps I was a bit heavy handed...

The bass was indeed a fretless bass, taken from the expansion card on my JV-35 directly to an audio track. Yeah, you're right, I tended to EQ the mids on the bass track down a little, to make room for the guitar. Am still developing the style, though, and will re-look at this philosophy on the next CD, which I'm starting to record now. With the purchase of a 1202 VLZ (for the pre-amps, primarily) and a C1, I'll probably have to re-think everything though. Perhaps shelving the low stuff on everything but the bass track, and leaving the mids alone on that track will suffice. Will look at it closer, in any case. Thanks again for listening...
 
Have gotten some excellent pointers. About ready to tackle 12 new songs with some new equipment - a C1 and the Mackie 1202 VLZ preamps. Thanks to those who have listened and made remarks on my first 5 songs (will post samples of the other 5 from the first CD if there's interest). Any more comments out there?

yeah, i'd like to hear more... i've noticed that since becoming an active participant in this clinic, my skills have improved some, and I know they will continue to improve the more folks share there stuff and their techniques and wisdom.
