Okay guys,

I posted some songs online. The post is in the Mp3 Mixing Clinic.
So go ahead, you can rag on my drumsounds, or rag on my playing.

The first song, Paxil Rose, was recorded in May of 2001.
The second song, Chin Omlette, was recorded for the 1.5 Hour recording competition being held in the Mp3 Mixing Clinic.

hey tim

good stuff...I just have a couple of various comments...

unfortunately, I'm at work - so I can't turn it up and hear everything at a 'proper' volume

regardless, I really like the controlled mayhem of 'paxil rose' (brilliant name, by the way)

- absolutely love the growling bass sound
- your drumming is nice and furious and super-tight
- the horns are great

I don't like your snare sound on 'chin omlette' - too tight and boxy

I may come back and edit this post when I can actually hear more of what's going on

I know what you mean about the snare.
I've been toying with it a bit recently. It's an 8"x14" Brass Freefloating snare by Pearl.
Normally, I have it tuned down about an octave below that, but I've been trying to see what kind of sounds I can get out of it.....and I've been working on my "one handed roll", so I had the snare cranked down really tight...almost like a marching snare....the toms and kicks on the other hand, I had tuned as low as they would go.

My younger brother wrote Paxil Rose. Besides the electric Bass, there's an Upright buried in there as well....he played the same thing on both the electric and the upright, and we combined them to come up with that sound.
I love that as well....I can't remember what we used for overdrive though...he has an Alembic tube bass preamp (he has all rackmounted gear, and a 1,500 Watt amp driving a pair of Carvin boxes...a 1x15" and a 2x10" with a horn) and man, when he get's that thing going with the overdrive, it sounds like a freight train! Hahaha That may have been a Rat, but he normally uses a Boss Overdrive that he's had for about 20 years.(He has about every pedal known to man! Hahaha If he sees one he doesn't have, he'll snag it.)

The Snare on Paxil Rose was a Chrome Rogers 5"x14" (I think!?!) we borrowed it from a friend it was a Dynasonic...it may have been a 6.5", but I'm almost positive it was a 5" drum. We put a white coated Ambassador on top, and a diplomat on the snare side. Man, that drum is SWEET sounding.
That sucker sings like crazy!
Now I'm curious, I'm going to have to ask what size it was! We had it for one day, and cut 4 tracks with it.

I really DO need to invest in a few snares. I miss having a 5"x14"...I bought the 8" drum as a utilitarian thing...I've played some kind of heavy metal/hard rock for so long that it was pretty much standard...and it compliments the 28" Kick drums fairly well...but the reaction time definitely is not the same as a 5" drum.

I'm going to be putting up just some drum stuff pretty soon, because these guys wanted to hear me doing the heel-toe technique, and it dawned on me that I don't even have any stuff recorded where I use the really fast stuff....it has an odd sound to it....the best description that I can give of it, is it sounds "more like a ball that is rolling", than it does "dots on a line" (regular heel up double bass)
