Some new recordings

New version:

Sounds too close-miked on the drums. Not a good sound. Lack of any real sweet high end or air.

Everything pretty muffled.

God.. that keyboard.... Is that a Casio? WAYYY to upfront to the mix.

Guitar sounds out of tune as hell.

Drummer reminds me of Cotton from Bitch Slap. This can't be good. :) It's called playing "in time" and it's something he needs to figure out.

Can't listen to any more... sorry....

Know when to quit while you're ahead. This turd can't be polished. Best to start over from scratch with in-tune guitars, and drums that don't come out of a kitchen set.

really?

AHHHH! I thought i was understanding this stuff!

Do you think the sound as anything to do with my room? I'm recording in a cramped unfinished basement corner, and I think that may be my problem. Then again maybe I shouldn't blame the room when I probably made some sort of mistake.

Well, if you are going for the ultimate lo-fi hardcore sound, I think you nailed it. :D

Was this a recording of a "live" session or did you overdub? What equipment are you using (mics, amps, preamps, software/hardware)? How did you place mics, etc. I am sure you will get better advice if you can be more specific about what you did and what you want to accomplish.

It sounds like a poor recording of a song idea that has some potential. With a "whiny" vocal, it could be reminiscent of early Dinosaur Jr., or similar stuff. Good luck.

Here is the setup.

Drums: I have a shure PG48 above the snare and hi-hat, this picks everything, except the bass drum, which has a shure pg52 on it.

Guitar: I have a shure pg57 on it and the Bass-7, Mid-5, Treb-8, Gain-7. The amp is a Marshall solid-state avt275.

Bass: I have the same shure pg57 on it, the amp is a peavey basic 112, EQ is set for less lows and more highs.

I have all this running into a yamaha mg16/4 mixer, then the i/o insert jacks go out to a delta 44, which goes into cubase se on the computer.

I'm trying to get a good heavy metal sounding bass drum, and a snare sound between the snare being off, and the snare being on.. if that makes any sense.

EDIT: Forgot about the keyboard. Its crap, i know. My brother wrote the song on guitar pro with that part played by keyboard, when they don't have a keyboardist, or anyone in the band that can even play keyboard decently. They wanted to record it so i figured what the hey.

I'll be removing that and replacing it with guitar :D

The room isn't going to help, but trust me--you can get better results than this if you keep trying, reading up on stuff. I think a LOT of the problem has to do with the source.

Get the drums to sound great in the room.

Same with the guitar, although it may be tough with that amp. Try lowering the gain a bit, and going a little lighter on the eq settings (especially the bass). The guitar had a sour tone to it...

Don't get discouraged, just keep working at it. Trust me, at one time everyone that is now good was exactly where you are now. Just keep plugging away.

And don't be afraid of the occasional "reality check" when someone says they didn't dig your work. No matter how good you record something someone will always find some fault.
