hi all,
I recently uploaded some of my experimental compostions onto the net and i'd love to hear your thoughts seeing as i've never had anyone else listen to it.
here's the link: http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/alternative/mysterium

i'd really appreciate your reviews... and i know its not your usual rock/ mainstream stuff. Think of it as Pink Floyd gone to Kenya and tripped out with Beethoven on some rainforest mushrooms.

thats strange, its probably the site because its under construction still... your from north port? im from riverview which is by tampa

Link works fine now, very nice sound, spooky and ethereal. Cool.

fantasia revisited

i dont know, im sure you could've mixed this a million different ways. but i have to say that there is a metallic hair clipper sound in the background that kinda needs to be changed, it either cant be their 24/7 or it needs to be a little different. but about 99% of this is awesome. It sounds VERY deep, as in you have good dynamics and levels of sound. a lot of samples, of not all i assume. around 3:00 you have a quiet passage that is great, more again about dynamics, i love how it changes right there. pretty good stuff. definitely trance music, not my total cup of tea.

Scriabin,

First off, nice work. I did notice a couple things I would change with one particular piece.

This is all IMO of course, and my first 'addition' really to this community...

On Atlantis, the entire instumental value of the song only lasts about 45 seconds (1:04 to 1:49 start of fade out). While this may have been your point (the story of the city of Atlantis disapearing without a trace), I think the listening value would be increased by lengthing it at very least another 30 seconds, or even a minute. More variation in the actual tune would be required, but in listening to your new classical tune which you just uploaded, I'm sure you could come up with something ;) I might even throw in a little grungry guitar, maybe even with a little wah to spice it up.

The drums during the instrumental are too quiet and too full of highs. A live drummer would help, but even a good drum machine could be used. I'd make up for it by lightening up the beat a bit, using less hi-hat, less snare, more toms, more bass drum and a few fills thrown in for a 'ride'. Definately a more driving beat is required, and much more volume on the bottom to balance out with the background 'ocean'. Even a good bass drop using a generator would be cool in place of the drums, of course aligned rythmicly.

Overall the mix sounds clean, almost entirely digital (maybe warm it up by dropping it out through a tube pre-amp, and then back in for the record?). I'd probably normalize the sucker a bit, a little bit more compression, top up the drums, and stretch it out. Also, I'd fade out the background 'ocean' and pan into the instrumental, and fade it back in at the end.

hey Waldo thanks for your suggestions, thats what i wanted to hear, my friend. ya your right the small percussion section is begging for something... ill get to work on it. Basically at the time i start to arrange that song i just wanted to create a soundscape of being underwater. it defintely has more potential... but ill have to get to work, im leaving for college in a few days:rolleyes:
which drums were you talking about being to high? oh, and all of the drums in @ and some of the others were performed by a real drummer.
thanks,
scriabin

The drums in Atlantis during the 1:05-1:49 section are too high in frequency, too much hi-hat and snare. Basically, I wouldn't touch the hi-hat with the sticks more than once every 10 beats and the snare probably wouldn't be used. More kick and toms. It needs more low tone to even out with the background, which is really heavy on the low sound. I'd maybe even drown the drums out, muffle them a bit, to sound a little more 'underwaterish', definately eq the suckers low, and drop the highs down.

allright thanks man! ill see what i can do considering i only have the master since i erased all the takes:confused:
i posted you a question in the nowhereradio help forum. if u dont read it there i was hoping you could answer it here. how do i delete a song off of the website " out of africa" and can i just reupload atlantis after i tweak it some more?
thanks

I listened to Atlantis and thought it was wonderful. I thought it sounded more industrial than underwater, which is probably why I liked it so much. I've tried my hand at some "experimental" stuff like this in the past but it wasn't nearly as coherent as this piece. I'll have to completely disagree with waldo on both the instrumentation and the composition.

I also listened to A Dream Within A Dream and I must say that I am even more impressed by this one. You really have a knack for creating wonderful moods. You should be scoring movies. How much is you? How much is digital?

Ok now I'm listening to Fantastica Revisited. You know, you're doing things on a different level than a lot of us around here. I would really be interested in hearing what kind of equipment you use and your basic writing/recording process.

I can't really comment on the actual mixes because I'm listening on phones, but the writing/composition and the sounds that I'm hearing are wonderful. I wouldn't call it "trance" or "experimental" even, I'd call it "imagination music". It definately creates an instant visual, and I think that you should definately explore the whole movie-scoring scene more. Very good stuff!

hey slack!,
god i dont feel worthy of those kind of comments man:)
shoot i've shadowed these boards for a few years basically everyday and the only reason ive got these kind of mixes is because of the information at this website based on the advice youve given among the many others. so i appreciate you giving it a listen.
well as far as genres go i like the term you gave it, " imagination music" because ive found it hard to label under one genre, lol i had to post it under World/folk and alternative on the website:) actually im major in digital media specializing in music at college this fall so i hope to score for movies, thats part of my dream. i mostly composed this stuff as a project that i can give to the professors at my audition for my major.
now for my setup:) its not the greatest stuff in the world but it suits me fine i guess:

sony viao 700mhz with 192mb and 20gb hard drive,
windows me os <- unstable as hell
packard bell 350 mhz with 128mb and 6gb hard drive
windows 98 optimized for digital audio
kurzweil sp 76 for piano
roland jv1080
event 20/20's <- i love them
tascam 414 for ambient sound capturing
a crappy dynamic mic
cad c-1000
rode nt1
neumann tlm 103
and i use my tascam as a poor man's mixer
mostly ntrack for multitracking
a multitude of different plugins and other audio apps that caused me to go into the poverty level bracket at the age of 18

as far instruments go:
marshall 1969 superlead
69' fender strat reissue
sg strandard
danelectro
blah blah blah...
electric violin
a set ludwig drums with zildjans
and some different ethnic drums whose name i have no idea:)

most of those songs on the site use samples and synths to a greater degree. for instance on fantasia revisted the orchestral section is a bunch of loops and samples that i had to arrange which was a complete fiasco:) considering i couldnt rent out the philidelphia philharmonic for a session... so i got the next best thing, the moscow sessions orchestra:) oh and the b3 organ at the end of fantasia is the b4 plugin being played in real time with my computer keyboard! lol

im really glad you liked it and as far as my recording goes its not near the caliber of yours, sjokos' or blue bear sounds' and the rest of the "elite."
and im not blowing smoke up your ass either:)
thanks slack,

as far as my process goes in composing, recording ect...

1) i only composes when i have an inspiration or else i just spew out mediocrity, which absolutely despise since im the world's worst perfectionist :)
2) i only have one inspiration - a girl that has filled my mind my entire life and i never had the courage to talk to her...even now.
3) most of the time i just hear the stuff in my head and i cant go to bed or think until i get it out.
4) taken from the beatles i usually wont start recording for a few days after i compose. theory being is that if i cant remember how it went, it couldnt be that good.

my recording process is like this:
i wake up at 10 am turn on my computer, cruise homerecording.com, set up my equipment, sketch an out line of how i want the song to flow, pick out the sounds and tune up, then the madness begins :) after the smoke fades, sometimes, something coherent comes out lol

hey david,
i really like your music you posted here a couple days ago. Really nice stuff:) as for the violin its a fender, ya i can play it but im not in your range at all... the thing about the violin is it doesnt sound as full as one with a hollow chamber but's a blast to run it through my marshall amp and process the bejesus out of it... it also makes recording a wee bit easier if i go direct. i havent ewritten for the violin maybe i should sometime to try somthing new:)
post some more of ur stuff man, its great!

....just for the record, I shouldn't be lumped in with the "elite" on this board. I've been here a long ass time, and that's it really. I have yet to record anything that sounds even remotely nice. Although with the help of the "elite" pros around here, maybe someday I will :)

Anyhow, back to your thread...

scoring is definitely your forte ,good job on dream with in a dream.i am also into the floyd among other things. maybe add a gilmouresque electric slow burn for another dimension.

only one problem with adding a gilmour solo.... we need david gimlour:)
i wish roger waters and him would make amends because it hasnt been the same without waters' lyrics. i will admit that i like the gimlour floyd more than the solo waters stuff. funnily enough my favorite solo from gilmour isnt "time" or "comfortably numb"... i always loved that solo at the end of "dont leave me now" off the wall. he only takes one note and sustains it forever. it gives me goose bumps even now.
thanks for listening!
